A company called Ad Hoc Controls has entered the remote control/sensing market with a number of products applicable to home use. They are pricey but what is most interesting is that their remote controls don't use batteries! Here's their URL.

The technology they are based on is from a German company called EN Ocean in case you want more info about it after reading the above.
