Title: Members Sharing Their Original X10 Home Automation Ideas
Post by: TakeTheActive on October 14, 2006, 03:46:49 PM
Since, for all intensive purposes, it takes practically forever to get approval from X10 Management to have a new Forum created (or an old Forum re-named), I've created this new Locked STICKY which will LINK to all the new User-Submitted Ideas. So,

;D START TYPING THEM UP! ;D
To encourage participation, maybe we can persuade X10 Management to offer a small reward / module when an Idea reaches XX (TBD) Positive Votes. ;)

Note: Edited title removing the "Updated Date Tag,fixed link to James S smoke detector post"
Title: Working Automation Ideas and Mods [LINKS]
Post by: Tuicemen on March 26, 2008, 04:40:31 PM
There are so many cool ideas in the forum and many have been buried under the cork board "How DO I ..." posts!
I was asked in chat is there a link to all the great Ideas the users have came up with!
So in responce this is it!

Please don't post working ideas or mods here only links to them!
That way the links won't get buried in this thread too! ;)
I'll start off with a few, when you find one post the link here it doesn't even have to be yours! ;)
I hope the list continues to grow!

Please help me & the forum!
Either post a link or PM me with one and I'll add it!
Note: Rather then edit TTA's Post and add in these, I added a post and unlocked the thread!

My original home automation Idea was that I would be able to control the temperature in each room, have the lights turn on and off depending on activity, and natural light considerations.  Due to range consirderations, and the updating of many lights to CFL's I find this to be highly unlikely

Most of our lights are now CFLs.  Installing filters where necessary still allows virtually 100% reliability under X10 control.

There are high-end thermostats that offer X10 control.  Tied in with motion sensors, that could give you the option to adjust the programmed settings as people move around.  However, that may not work as you want due to the thermal lag in such a system.

For a similar investment, you might consider one of the multi-zone control systems available from the HVAC manufacturers.  We have the Bryant 8-zone system here.  While not capable of integrating with X10 motion sensors, it provides multiple settings at each zone every day.  So, it can be programmed with your lifestyle to control only those areas that are normally used during that portion of the day.

A third option is to use a high-end controller, such as the Ocelot, Stargate, or HomeVison, to actually monitor temperatures in each room, and write your own control algorithms.  Of course, those sensors would be hardwired.  We monitor inside and outside temperatures, and control auxiliary ventilation to pull in the cooler early morning air when the daytime temperatures are hot.
