Title: XP Service Pack 3
Post by: Bill H on May 06, 2008, 08:36:24 PM
Just got an alert that Windows wants to install Service Pack 3. Has anyone updated and what was the result on AHP? My AHP is working well...nervous about rocking the boat.

That's interesting.  I have Automatic Updates turned on and nothing about SP3 has come in yet.

So far, only on 1 computer (of course the one with AHP). Three other computers are also running but nothing on either of those yet.

I've made 3 attempts to install Service Pack 3, but no luck so far.  If I ever get it installed I'll let you know if it affects AHP.

Still nothing on the other computers. The AHP computer is XP Pro, no others...perhaps the update is only for Pro only? Keep trying JMac!

The only "bad" news I read about SP3, is that it seems to be incompatible with Bluetooth devices, including Microsoft's own Bluetooth mice and keyboards.  :(

When my Windows 2000 editing computer was updated with its last service pack, my entire Pinnacle (pro version) video editing system became useless with the "Blue Screen of Death." The Pinnacle drivers were not compatible with the service pack and it had to be uninstalled (and everything then reloaded). X10 drivers aren't even signed, so I remain concerned.

Just installed Service Pack 3.  I don't see any problems with X10 so far.  Everything seems as before - camera works, switches work, etc.  I'll report on the macros, timers and the rest later.
Had some problem with the install.  After 4 or 5 attempts (anti virus and spyware off & all programs closed) I down loaded the file and still no install.  I ran "chkdsk" (chkdsk /f /r C:) at the C: prompt and numerous bad clusters were replaced.  Then, the install worked as advertised.  I have XP Home Edition, Version 2002, and now Service Pack 3 is installed.

Nice work, JMac. Will look forward to your followup. Still nothing on my XP, non-Pro, computers.

I have automatic updates disbled. Two days ago manually it indicated it was available for me. I decided to wait a few days to see what was reported, before the leap.

Just though I'd mention that if you have Automatic Updates turned on in XP, you pretty much have already what's in SP3, so if you do install it 95% won't change anything.

I thought SP's were mostly new and enhanced features, and (critical) updates were the bug fixes?  For just one example, as I mentioned above, SP3 adds native built-in Bluetooth support to XP (though it doesn't seem to install well if you already have Bluetooth drivers).

Usually, service packs are bundles of all of the fixes released to date.  MS has a bad habit of including new features too.  :(

From what I have heard, SP3 includes several network security related features passed down from Vista.  It also does break some things (see the MS Knowledge Base for more info).

I'm a little scared to install it.  I remember SP2 far too well!   ;D

Security patches don't bother me too much.
It is the Enhancements that sometimes scare me. I have a friend who did SP3 and said it went fine and networking was one of the enhancements. That said I have also seen "My Install Got Busted" messages with SP3. I am also going to wait for s test time before jumping in.

So far the SP3 installation hasn't cause any problems in my X10 setup.  The AHP macros and timers work, and no crashes after 24 hours.  I realize everybody has a different collection of programs and drivers on their computers, so others might not fare so well.  If I have any problems I'll post it back here.

Have you updated yet? We need a guinea pig that is brave enough to try SP3 for us. Want to try it and let us know how AHP works under it?

I have, for what it's worth.  I have had no problems......

I did SP3 but can not give AHP details as I don't presently have it in use.
I have; so far; not found any problems with my installed programs. I may try some of the older not used much ones like the original AH I still have in a randomly used Icon folder.

Interesting note if you have IE7 installed before you update to SP3.

Interestingly, a search on the Microsoft site yields NO Service Pack 3 for XP.   For those who posted they have it, where did you get it?

Dan; I have also seen others say it was not available in their searches, but it is.
Mine showed up on my Check for Updates request through XP. If you search long enough you can even find the downloadable one for IT Managers to redistribute.

That's for Microsoft Office, not XP.

Only my XP Pro machine wanted to update...no other XP (Home) computers in the house had a clue. And, now, since ignoring the update icon, it's gone away so even the Pro machine is ignoring SP3 update. It's as though none of this happened. Think I'll go back to bed....

That link is for Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers, not for the average XP user.   Try again for the average XP user.

If Automatic Update doesn't offer it to you. Then I guess Microsoft doesn't see your install as a candidate for the update. Then as you pointed out. It looks like the IT version at present is the only alternative. ::)
I know someone with 4 XP computers and only one offered it. He did add it to the other three with no problems.
He may have used the downloadable IT version as I would not want to do about 3.5 hours of download time myself.

Talked to the IT person at work. Seems that Microsoft is staggering the Automatic Updates so that their servers don't get overloaded. When SP2 was released they got flooded and the servers where bogging down as everyone wanted it at the sametime.

I got it, and for me it's like the little kid who swallowed a quarter:  No Change.   45 minute download and a full reboot and everything still works like it did.
