Title: Does the IR543 work with the Firecracker Module (CM17A)?
Post by: ViperDragon on September 16, 2008, 01:24:26 PM
I recently purchased a Logitech Harmorny 659 universal remote and want to use it to control my X10 lighting and camera systems.  I read I would need to convert the IR signal to RF and one way was to use the X10 IR543 module.  So my question is will the IR543 work with the CM17A RF serial dongle that came with my FireCracker kit?  Thanks!

The IR543 receives IR signals from your remote and transmits codes onto the power line.  It will not transmit RF.

The CM17A Firecracker interface transmits RF to an X10 Tranceiver. Like the TM751 or RR501. That then sends X10 control signals over the power line to control X10 modules.

The IR543 uses the IR from your remote and send X10 signals over the power line to control modules.

So the CM17A and IR543 should not have a problem with each other. They will not even access the other one. Only remote chance of a problem could be if an RF command was sent the same time someone sent an IR command and there was a power line signal collision.

Thanks for the info.  I checked on Logitech's website and the IR543 is in their code library so with this device I should be able to control the lights by IR on the Harmony remote.  So I guess the only thing I won't be able to control with the Harmony remote would be switching between my X10 cameras via the VR36A receiver?

The X10 Wireless Cameras use addressable power suppies as you may have seen. When you set the House Code and Unit Code dials on the suppiles.
The cameras work in groups of four. Same House Code and Units 1-4;5-8;9-12 and 13-16. Turn one on the other three go off by themselves. So if you can get the Harmony to send on and off codes to the cameras address. You should be able to switch them.

Duh!  I should have remembered that!  I have had these things for a few years now!  Thanks!  I think I shall order one of the IR-543 modules.
