Title: X10 Commander: for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch!
Post by: Melloware on October 14, 2008, 11:12:27 AM
Want a native solution for controlling your X10 devices from your iPhone or iPod touch?   How about supporting all current X10 RF and IR remotes also?  Script multiple events so you can turn lights on in one room, dim them in another, and turn your tv on all from one button of your remote or iPod/iPhone?  Sounds good right.

Check it out...

I think philliec is referring to our native iPhone/iPod app for X10 called X10 Commander found here:

Check this out www.ikatron.com -> products -> imca. Seems very powerful does integration with x10 and can do much more. They work with integrators but you can ask them directly. See screen shots there

Yeah... I asked my wife for an iphone... and she said no.

But I am thinking that the new (looks like the iphone) ipod will also operate X10... is that true? What are the abilities/limitations with the ipod?

With the iPod or iPhone you can control X10 with our X10 specific application called X10 Commander.

Check it out here:  http://melloware.com/products/x10commander/

I think since i already have my communication protocol and server apps to support X10 from PC or Mac it is just a matter of writing the Android client.  Not sure how much it would entail but I would hope it is easier than for the iPhone!

Dave, that is fantastic!   Definitely visit our forums if you have any problems but the CM15A plays very nicely with our server side app that the iPhone talks to.  It also needs the SDK drivers installed but we provide a link to those.

Any ideas?

Martyn, THat is why I didn't support QueryPLC inside of X10 commander.  SO many different hardware combinations and drivers it seemed too flaky.  SO I just stuck with ON/OFF etc.

Aha... so no feedback at all from modules? That's so sad. i was looking forward to creating a rather sexy HMI on my TSU9400 Pronto that could emulate the ahp front screen, but would definately need bi-directional for that.

no other options?

(thanks for the quick reply Dave).

Well you could switch technologies. :)  Zwave offers bi-directional information on all modules in the base specification.

Another question then (if you don't mind...) does X10Commander support relative bright/dim instead of just absolute bright/dim (i.e percentage)?

I don't suppose you have a complete protocol list to hand that you could send me?

ta very much...

To get the relative DIM and BRIGHT just use this registry change...

Code: [Select]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Melloware\X10Commander\DimAccuracyEnabled

1 is for ON and 0 is for OFF

A lot of users requested it the other way around to avoid confusion but this allows you to choose between the two ways.

X10 Commander can send OFF and ON and DIM and BRIGHT commands to any X10 address. If your alarm responds to those, it will work for you. Note that you must have a PC running the X10 Commander server. It won't work if the PC connected to your CM15A (or whatever X10 interface you use) is off.

To run VNC on a Blackberry, check out VNC+
It can be obtained from this link http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=9876

I have been using this on my Curve 8330 for about a year and it works as advertised. Easy to setup and use and the connection has been very reliable.

I have heard of such levels of frustrations... and to be honest... many years ago even felt some real frustration when I could not figure out how to configure and operate a [what was then a very pricey] sheetbed scanner. But I've never heard of allowing such frustration levels to help in the use of any recent technology. Have you posted your problem... or maybe just searched and read at: http://forum.melloware.com

I strongly disagree. It works fine for me, and for many other users, over both WiFi and 3G. If you follow the instructions at the X10 Commander Forum (http://forum.melloware.com/viewforum.php?f=13), you will get it working.

I just downloaded the new version, but the installer didn't let me change the install location.
I manually moved the files after the installation.
I prefer to place it in a different folder, as permissions to C:\Program files(x86) in windows 7 do not allow the log file to be written properly.
Title: Re: X10 Commander: Control X10 from iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch!
Post by: Melloware on November 05, 2010, 07:38:17 AM
The log is now being written to C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\X10 Commander which your user does have permission to write to.

In X10 COmmander UI there is a now a "Log File" button right on the main screen that opens your log file in Notepad for you.

Melloware

I have been using X10 Commander for a few weeks now.
it seems to do what it is meant to do.

Howvere I have a couple of things which I think could be looked at:

1) the list of devices which appears in the roller menu on the iphone is always in alphabetable order rather than the order which I put them in on the server.
2) I also believe that the roller selector in x10 Commander is not the best way to select the devices. - I would like to have an option to have a folder type arrangement where devices 1-6 is in the 1st window, 7-12 in a 2nd window etc
Title: Re: X10 Commander: for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch!
Post by: Melloware on December 28, 2010, 08:43:13 AM
Aussie Mate,

I definitely understand your UI requests.

However most people seem to prefer the current UI and the "quick acting" roller.  From anywhere in the I can hit the X10 Commander button on my iphone, immediately find my device or macro, turn it on or off and then logout.

From canvasing users over the last 2 years most of them are never in the app more than 30 seconds, and prefer not to navigate a maze of folders, tabs, etc.

As for alphabetical ordering there is an easy solution to force the order you want.  What most users do it label there devices...

01 Kitchen Lights
02 Bedroom
03 Outdoor Lights
04 Garage

etc.  Since the 00 numbering then forces them in the order you give them with the nubmer in the name.

Hope that helps!

I store everything in the registry here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Melloware\X10Commander

Is it possible you are running under another user account and thus the HKEY_CURRENT_USER will be different per user logged into your machine.

Hi Melloware

I like your app but have you been asked or thought about changing the layout so it just has multiple pages with buttons you can label and then just assign commands to those buttons.  This would add a level of complexity (and setup) for everyone who purchases the app.  I guess it could be the x10 advanced app or something and you could charge like 15-20 bucks for it. I would pay. Currently I am using a device called cueserver and there app (http://interactive-online.com/products/apps/cuepad) to control my x10 stuff.  You can check out the layout I am talking about there.  I have purchased your app and I am waiting for a few more pieces I ordered to arrive to try it out.  The problem with cueserver is in order to control the x10 stuff I am using contact closures from cueserver to buttons on one of the x10 wireless controllers but cueserver is limited to 8 outputs.  I was able to expand it to 12 but that is only 6 modules (on and off).  So this really limits the number of devices you can control not to mention all the tracing and soldering on the PC board I had to do.

1. Did anyone else face the same problems and how were it resolved?
2. Is X10 Commander better than ActivePhone?

Another advantage is that the server half is free, and you can write your own web interface to use on the phone end, or in any browser.
Another advantage is that AHP doesn't need to be running, just the X10nets service.

I got ipad and purchased X10 Commander. Installed server and iPad softwares. Problem is I can't get it to work. Problem # 1. Says"passwords do not  match". What password? my AHP does does not require password. 2.Server Error. "server disconnected. Check host. IP and port address in main setting applications". They are the same. What am I missing? How do I check/open port and see if antivirus program is blocking.

Would appreciate help.

I just had to reinstall and change password. Now it works. How well... that will have to wait.

Thanks.

X10 Commander is working fine except the following:
1. it does not operate 3-pin appliance module AM466. Where as Active phone operates without a hitch.
2. All device data is lost after rebooting. Which can happen due to power interruption. That means if I am out of the house then I can not use X10 commander. Again Activephone has no such problem.
3. Connecting to 3G network. It probably is easy for software savvy, but others have to struggle. Again no such hassle in connecting Activephone to 3G network.

So where is the advantage in X10 Commander? May be it shows the devices in more orderly fashion and roll on index operates better. These are big pluses but the negatives, listed above, are even bigger.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put X10 Commander down. I use it and would like it even better if I did not have to worry about these points. I like it because as I said in my previous message that ActivePhone does not list devices properly.
So I guess till Melloware and X10 can get around to fixing these problems, I'll have to keep both on my iPhone and ipad.

The AM486 modules on my IPad operate fine.  Now, they are not three pin, but I don't see why that would matter.

1. Are you sure you have it enabled on the server side? My 3 pin AMs work fine.
2. Open X10 commander on your pc and exit it. It will save it in the registry.

Activephone always worked fine for me but I found the GUI visually offensive and not intuitive at all....IMO.
The house code dial is a PAIN! I could never get it to the code I wanted. Of course, I'm using an iPod. I guess the iPad's bigger screen may
eliminate that issue.

Thanks JMac and B.A.

AM466 is activated on the server and I can see it on iPhone and iPad. When I click it on either of them, slider goes to 49% and AM466 does not respond. Why is I don't understand.

I think Melloware should go back in there and fix the problems that I have highlighted.

Slider goes to 49%? The AM466 is an Appliance module. It only has On and Off. There should not be a slider at all.
You probably have it defined incorrectly.

Thanks Noam

You are right it is an appliance module. But it does show a slider. However after reading you message, I went back to the AHP setup and discovered that I had selected bi direction appliance module. So I changed that to 3 pin appliance mod. and all is working o.k. It still shows the slider bot goes 0-100%.

I know this is an old post but I'm still using X10 commander on an Iphone XS.  I'm worried if I get a new iphone I won't be able to use it anymore with newer firmware. Any ideas if it will still work?
