Title: MS16A and Winter
Post by: bitman on October 17, 2008, 10:46:34 PM: PPFT! Aligators!? How 'bout minus 22 degree Colorado Rocky Mountain Winter?

I ~~want to~~ no I'm going to put a MS16A Hawkeye on the back deck of my high mountain home where it gets very cold at night and the hot sun bakes it during the day (Man I love this place), to detect the return of my dog from doing her business. Ringing a chime in the house.

How well do these devices do outdoors say in Minnesota or Green Bay etc.

My outdoor ActiveEyes get exposed to -30C (-22F) more often than I would like, and they work fine. Just make sure you have good alkaline batteries that can handle the temperature extremes.

I have it modded with a small toggle switch to shut off the chime when we don't need to hear it as I don't want to know when every crow, raccoon and sasquatch visit my deck but it will be great not having to poll the back door to see if my dog who never learned to bark to be let in, is back.

Wait, maybe a floodlight, camera and vcr controller will be in order as my home backs to dense national forest. There's at least bears.

Dave,

Are you jealous over Bitmans' view of the National Forest (vs our Indiana corn fields) or the fact that he has a dog that doesn't bark?

Post by: bitman on March 30, 2009, 11:36:08 PM: Our MS16a has run all winter on our back deck through sub-zero temps, gale force winds and blowing snow and baking Colorado afternoon sunshine. It is so frugal with it's battery power that it is spring now and the batteries show good as October!
