Title: New Home Page?
Post by: Brian H on November 05, 2008, 07:43:33 PM
OK I just went to the X10.com Home page and was completely  :o.
My thoughts where. What have they done now.

Any thought from others?

Yes if you like the old style you can find a small link to the more familiar style.

There is a new "Scratch and Dent Sale" Tab.

Well I went back to the site and the drop down windows work now.  :)% The scratch and dent sale is nice

But I'm pretty sure if my wife walked in on me shopping that site she would get a little mad.  I like looking at nice woman but that is getting crazy just to sell automation stuff. Would like to see if that helps their sales or just their web site hits.

Yes, I agree.
Somebody (as in wife or kid) causally glancing at the screen would think it was a porno site. none of the trollups equate to the products being sold. I just don't understand a sales connection between a bikini bimbo who contains more silicone than a CM15A, and remote controls or security or home automation.

My theory is; the X10 Marketing Director is 17 years old and probably still in high school.

Well it's a well known fact/marketing technique that "sex sells". Also since I believe the majority of their customers are male, they believe the scantly clad women are the best way to get our attention.

I am not sure on that. We see many ladies installing X10 Automation these days.

I bookmarked the old site link and refuse to go though the new one.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to be be wrong on this. I'm just basing my opinion on the observation of the the overwhelming percent of men that are active on this forum and the chat room I frequent.
Ladies if you're out there, speak up and prove me wrong!

Not a lady, but speaking up anyway.

The bimbo pix probably get a few of us men to hesitate before scrolling on. But the Bimbo pix do not sell any product. The product itself, convenience, security, and "techiness" sells the product. If Bimbo pix actually sold product then Smarthome.com would have silicone sisters plastered all over their web site. I think X10 marketing has some maturity issues.

I find the need to speak out about the new look of the X10 site.
It has occurred repeated times in my situation while either going through the daily emails or visiting the site and my young kids are near by and off everything has to go so as not to give the wrong impression to them.
A good laugh at first. but the email with the new look is totally unacceptable anymore by myself and oh boy the Wife too. I feel many here are feel the same about this and I for one as much as I enjoy doing the daily X10 Web rounds but must stop for starters the email and send them strait to Junk and for going to the main site will be less frequent. I have all the X10 I need. But Just going to the site always gives me the need to buy something new. Now, it is a totally different feel and so now I fill the Time playing with the kids, hold it that's a good thing then, I guess the I should Thank X10 for that.  Maybe to really a get a feel, put a vote to it.

Perhaps I should of bolded the words 'they believe' in the above as that was my real point. While I have at times checked out an "ad", none of my home automation purchases have ever or will ever be influenced by scantly clad pictures. I tend be more in agreement with your opinion as to the maturity level of the marketing staff.

All that said, I would still be interested in hearing a woman's perspective on the issue, if any are here to respond. Even more important is if anyone is offended by X10's advertising, male or female, they should contact X10's marketing department and file a complaint. Also while X10 does have some interesting 'multiple number' for 1 deals for items, there are other places to shop.

It would seem that x10's daily email has gone into the toilet as well.  I usually just send it right to my "delete" folder (trying not to use the word "trash" here) but for some unknown reason, I opened it up today right before church.  I had no idea how bad things had gotten.
Shame on you X10!

After that comment I had to look as well :-[
I guess it sells  ??? :'
But probably turns away a lot of potential purchases from females :'  :(

It sure isn't the way I'd try to advertise to women.
I'd be curious, however, what percent of their customers are women. Maybe they have abandoned that demographic to focus on sex starved males.

I'm a bit surprised X10 management has let it go this far!

The "bikini babes" were no worse than a lot of advertising these days.

The "sexy cop" girl was edging toward the dark side.

The latest group of lingire models cought in the act of removing their thong is something I would expect to see on late night TV ads for phone sex chat lines or "Wildest Bar in America" videos!

Clean it up a bit, would you?

I used to open every X10 email whether I needed anything or not, just to see what deals I might be missing out on.  Now I'm more likely to just delete it unless there is something specific I'm hoping to find a deal on.  This makes it much less likely I'm going to buy something on impulse.  That's better for my wallet, but actually worse for X10!

I used to open every X10 email whether I needed anything or not, just to see what deals I might be missing out on.

I use to check out their daily specials while having my first coffee every morning at work. I stopped when they added the auto-running video. When this thread first appeared I looked at the site once and never went back since. I definitely will never go to their site again while at work.

Thanks to X10 marketing, I no longer do impulse buys of stuff because it is on sale. Also, when new posters ask about a certain package and if it will do what they want, I can't help them since it would involve going to x10.com.

I often wonder about my own perspective on such matters. I am not a prude... and have often defended X10 ad's. I've always said X10 knows their customers and how to sell on-line.. they've been selling on-line as long as anyone. But these latest ad's have gotten just plain silly! I can't recommend the X10.com Site to anyone.

Bill is right. This is: X10 gone wild.

Yea I use to tell people about X10 in my travels for work. People love the idea of home automation. But if I tell people to go to that site and its there first time there they get the impression that the X10 stuff is a cheap product something you might find at a dollar store or something. Plus it might look bad on me if the site I recommend is as dirty as it can get before they have to ask your age to go on the site.

I don't even know what market research was done to decide that is the way to sell more. I mean the saying "sex sells" only goes so far.

I feel disrespected if the only reason they do that is cause we are guys. and one other thing... since I try to stay away from that site I have been going to others like smarthome.com and going there makes you look at Insteon stuff. Maybe switching over to that is the way to go. There product seems at least the same as x10 maybe better (according to some) and they seem more mature about selling it.  :'

And that is exatly why I wouldn't send some one to the X10.com Site. I don't want to look like a dirty old man. Heck... if I wanted to chase pretty young women... why would I be puttering around the house using X10. It doesn't make sense.

Betcha X10 will top the current "over the top" home page with another "more over the top" one in less than 6 months.

I can get most X10 hardware at prices less than X10 charges, the only thing I've ever bought from X10USA was Active Home Pro/CM15A.  All my other interfaces and control programs beginning with the CP290/DOS software through CM11A/Active Home were bought from third party vendors and my local X10 dealer.  The only reason I got AHP/CM15A from X10 was their refusal to sell to local X10 dealers below street prices.

Besides X10.com and local dealers (Near dayton Ohio I don't know of any local dealers)where do you get stuff that beats x10.com's prices. What I have seen is with there deals, 5-for-1 adds and even their regular price is pretty hard to beat.

Yea according to x10.. Their customers have no idea what they want to see on the web site. X10 "just knows" what we want and it has to be half naked woman.

Guess everyone or well 98% of us on here who don't like it....must not be x10 customers and or we just don't know what we like!! Sure glad X10 web guys are here to let me know what I want to see while shopping  :'

This forum is a great representation of their repeat customers. and would go as far to say this forum and the people on it is a hugh reason they sale as much as they do.

Its free tech support and more support by these people/customers then you get from x10 themselves.
And also a great place for x10 to get customer feed back.

Title: Re: New Home Page?
Post by: HA Dave on May 07, 2009, 10:34:52 AM
I highly doubt this forum is a good representation of their customer base.

I am sure in some if not many regards... many of us here are not the average users... but very likely we are typical users.

Many of us do own more X10 products than I would guess the average customer owns. The regulars here.. also seem to be more concerned about why things work (as they do or don't) than the average user. And whereas the average user does visit the forums here (at least once)... the average user doesn't hang about to help others.

I think like most X10 users... the regulars here are typical. We found X10 on the Internet and after some reading and searching we decided to take a chance. We discovered some of the technologies frustrations and found this forum... [at roughly the same time]. Every regular here... has an addictive or passionate affection for X10 and/or Home Automation. Many of us have purchased some X10 product(s)... just to learn more about them. And most of us have a big box (of some sort) of spare parts.

Our [the regulars here at the forum] setups tend to continue to grow. Some of us have larger than average setups... and like typical X10 users... we enjoy showing off our setups.

And here is the rub: Often guests to my home ask for demonstrations of my Home Automation. It seems word of my "computer controlled house" has spread. And where I do have a true passion for X10... I don't care to have my name associated with Internet images of scanty clad women. The first time I heard myself refer to my Home Automation as using "Smart Home Technology"... it sadden me deeply. I realized at that point I was embarrassed by X10... and that I needed to express that here.

For sometime... X10 has been known for its bathing suit beauty's in its Internet ads. The ad's did set X10 apart from the rest of the crowd... it was hokey.. and almost cute. But some months ago... the advertisements started using "darker" images. We don't know why. And interestingly.... in the same way that my colorblind brother can't see the difference between blue and purple... many can't see the difference in the images X10 is using. And some others can see the difference... and like the new ads.

I don't mean to sound critical of those who like or want the new imagetry X10 has selected. I share my believes with others... not because I think my believes are superior... but because they have brought to me a value and happiness that I willingly share. It is my willingness to share what I have learned... that has caused me to become a regular here at the forum. And I think... it is the same reason why so many of us regulars here... oppose the new darker images.
