Title: Found a new app for Android Phones to control X10
Post by: Geewiz on January 18, 2010, 10:14:15 PM
I came across an app being developed that will control your X10 modules from your Anroid phone.  It's a tight little app that's still being worked on by the developer and it's easy to set up and use.

Here's the link: http://autom8.clangen.org/

The alias can be whatever you want it to be.
I have no idea what password it starts out with, if any. Just enter your own. Personally I like 'rubberCamel'. Lol.

The host address is the IP to the machine where you installed the server.

Anyone know if it'll work on Linux? I heard there are some hacked up drivers for the CM15A required for this to work.

Hey All,

I downloaded that autom8 and have tried for three days and can't get it to work. Also sent e-mail to the person who wrote the software and he or she has not answered either..  I'm at my wits ends, any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank You

I think the autom8 project is abandoned....

Why not try our X10 Commander (http://=http://melloware.com/products/x10commander/) for Android?  it is supported 100% by me and I guarantee it works.  You can read the Android Market user reviews.

I did try your software, but i couldn't figure it out. When it comes to figuring out host and all of that other stuff i become stupid. Does your software allow the door sensors to contact you when a door is open and you're not home?

Thanks
Jeff

PS> I might try it again if i can get help setting it up!!

Ahh unfortunately since I programmed for the lowest common denominator (old serial CM11) it does not notify you of server events.  It was meant for purely controlling your devices when away from the house (or inside the house).

yeah see autom8 would contact you on your phone if a door with a door sensor was opened.  But unfortunately i cant get it to work. And you say its been abandoned, so i guess i'm SOL.  B:(

And you have tried to contact the author?  I have just noticed he has not updated his site or info in a long time which made me think the project was abandoned.  Usually an active project you can tell from looking at the website.

yeah i sent him an e-mail a couple of days ago and no answer so far.  does your software work with droid x os 2.2. the only thing i liked about his was the part with the wireless door sensors reporting to me.  I have an ademco alarm system and i would need to use an ademco ICM module to make my existing alarm contact me. Yes X10 Commander is tested on Android 2.2 (Froyo).  Are you sure Ademco doesnt have a Droid app?  I know companies like Vector security and others raced to get their iPhone apps out there I am sure a lot of them have Droid apps as well.

It is way easier that you are making it harder.  It is port 6003 not 6301.

See this screenshot of the server.  It has your IP Address, POrt and Password.  In the screenshot below it is Host 10.3.3.120 on Port 6003 and the password well, is whatever you type in.  Those values need to be the same on the Droid app settings.

i meant 6003  :)  i've followed all of that and still no conection...on my web interface it say "host:192.168.1.139"  "port 6003" and my own password and "com port: 1"  and i've entered all that info in my droid app and all i get is "Error  Failure to connect to server 192.168.1.139/192.168.1.139:6003 "  do i have to have my wifi on my phone active and if so then this app only works within my home wireless router.  And no i'm not making this harder than what it is, its just how my life goes with this stuff (nothing electrically in house ever work right without major hassles)

Yes that IP address 192.168.1.139 is your internal WIFI IP Address. So try your Droid connected to your WIFI network and I bet it works.   Once you get it working then moving on to having it work over your 3G/Edge connection is a little more complicated because you have to expose port 6003 to the external Internet.

Instructions for that are here:

http://forum.melloware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7070 (http://forum.melloware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7070)

Don't forget to look at this EXCELLENT diagram of the process....

http://www.usabilityinstitute.com/articles/x10.htm (http://www.usabilityinstitute.com/articles/x10.htm)

I know this seems daunting but exposing one of your ports/PC's to the external Internet is a proposition that should not be entered into lightly that is why it seem difficult.  Because it should be difficult else hackers would already own your home PC and network  :o

Unless for some reason Windows Firewall or Windows Defender are blocking the connection it should work on your own WIFI network if you have the IP and Port entered on the Droid correctly.  My guess is Windows Defender or Windows Firewall might be at work here....

autom8 author here,

I just found this thread -- didn't realize anyone was actually using my software. I recently released a new version of both the client and server here: http://autom8.clangen.org. I also added a new FAQ and Installation sections to the website that should hopefully address all of the questions you guys had in this thread, including "how to install," "how to configure security sensors" and "working over wifi but not 3g."

Now that active home supports the disarm command, will autom8 or x10commander implement this if its possible?
Title: Re: Found a new app for Android Phones to control X10

The autom8 server already keeps track of armed and disarmed states for security sensors, and you can arm and disarm units directly from the Android client. However, this state is independent of the ActiveHome Pro software.

I do like the new style, hopefully you can tell me how to fix that !!

Just fixed the duplicate notification sound/vibrate bug and posted 0.2.2 to the website. Thanks for reporting this.

Note you will only need to reinstall the Android client (v0.2.2), the server was unchanged.

Hi "Autom8 author"

I really like your software and the way it looks on the tablet screen.

just wondering if your software is able to support multiple tablets at the same time?
(ie with different IP & MAC addresses).

This would allow us to have a number of touchscreens around the house.

Yup, it should support multiple tablets at the same time without issue. You can also mix in phones well, if you want.

Many thanks for the great program!  #:)

I recently released a new version (0.2.5) of autom8 with the following changes:

android:

  • improved battery usage when security notifications are disabled
  • fixed blurry drawing observed on high resolution devices
  • all strings are now localized and can be easily translated
  • fixed bug where background notification may disappear until the app is opened again
  • fixed strange edge-case bug where user could get stuck creating a new profile
  • improved connection reliability

server:

  • fixed bug where clients with high latency or low bandwidth could cause lag when updating devices on faster connections
  • huge performance improvements, now scales to support over hundreds of simultaneous clients
  • fixed UI performance issues when log file becomes extremely large, or lots is logged in a short period of time
  • fixed bug where new connections may be accepted during the shutdown process
  • fixed many small bugs

I've just tried autom8, but I am having difficulties with it.

Server and client are up and running, I can connect to the server, moreover I can switch the test lamp modul on/off, but the status of the modul never gets updated once it gets swithced.

On the server I still see the swithced device on, even if in fact I turned off successfully by the client.
...and on the client dide the status indicator turns into an endless loop and it never gets the new status and I also can't switch any more.

@_avatar
Do you have any idea what this could be?
Title: Re: Found a new app for Android Phones to control X10
Post by: _avatar on January 16, 2011, 02:51:06 PM
@olympia

In the server are you using uppercase names for the house codes? For example, are you using "A10" instead of "a10"? If so, can you try to make all the housecodes lowercase and try again? This was definitely a bug in the original server that I appear to have forgotten to port over to the new one.

*EDIT* I just posted a new version of the server to the website that should disallow this from happening in the future. You should try installing the new version, deleting all your old devices, and recreating them with 0.2.6.

I have started to use this app - so far so good. I really like the look and feel of the app.
I plan to mount the tablet on the wall as a touch screen

The only problem I have noticed that the app doesnt seem to handle a modules / lights with extended codes...

it will turn them on but wont update the status on the tablet - this causes it to hang.

Any ideas?

I thank you for the wonderful autom8 program.

I am trying to run the  autom8 server program  on a Windows Home Server machine. It works fine when I am logged in. I then tried to add it as a service. But it crashes as a service when windows home server starts. I can start the service when I Am logged in from the services console. But again on rebooting the machine the service crashes on startup

Any help suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

This is something I plan to support in the future, but I'm still trying to (1) figure out how exactly I want to do it, and (2) find time to implement it.

I've never used Windows Home Server, so I don't know what this means exactly. Cursory research suggests I may need to implement some sort of special "AddIn" layer to support WHS properly. Can you just ask the autom8 client to start when you log in? The easiest way to do this is adding a shortcut to autom8 in the Start Menu > Startup directory. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/hwandprograms/autorun.mspx

Dear Avatar

Thanks for your reply. Windows Home Server is like any other server such as Windows server 2003. The question I meant to ask is how can I run Autom8 as a windows service, so that it runs even when a user is not logged in.

At this time when I run Autom8 as a service it does not start on starting the computer. The only way to start it is to run the program while you are logged in.

I would not bother you to worry about a Home server add in, as that is not required. The only purpose of my question is to be able to run Autom8 as a windows service so that it can run when the computer is running even without a user logged in.

Thanks
I really appreciate your work
Also Can I donate to your work?

Thanks
RS

I not sure which module /device has the extended codes, I think many people on this forum call them "soft start".(the AHP version I use is the the European/Australian version and modules are called different names
Can someone give Avater an example of modules that use extended /soft start codes?

To the author of autom8 - THIS IS VERY VERY COOL!  THANK YOU.    #:)

It works great over wifi, haven't tried it over 3G yet, and now I'm motivated to extend the range of my cm15a.

One question for anyone who's figured this out, how do you reorder the devices on an Android 2.2?  Currently my devices are listed b1, b10, b11, b12, b2, b3....

I've tried putting a space between "b" and "11" to fix the sort order, but the server won't control the module then.

Again, this is very slick stuff and the author has my thanks.  Don't need a users guide, but I'd love to know how to reorder the devices, and/or how to create my own customizable user interface.  Perhaps to "park" some rarely used house/unit codes off to the bottom of the list.

Been using x10 for 20 years, AHP for 5+ years, using WIFI for one month, Verizon MIFI 2200 for 2 weeks, and an Android phone for 5 days.  I'm certainly in a state of techno-overload, but d*mn, we can't be far from setting timers and macros on our droids.

Peace.

With tasker support (http://tasker.dinglisch.net/) we could do location based or timed events.  I use a profile that checks my cell towers, if im near my home towers it will then check if my wifi is near.  It will then switch to my wifi and switch my radio to 2g.

The possibilities are endless and very exciting!

Hi _avatar.  Thanks for such a great program.

What we would like is for the autom8 server to run even when no user is logged in.  There are third-party utilities (like FireDaemon) that allow us to install any program as a windows service.

The problem with autom8 is that it runs in the context of the logged-on user by storing necessary files in the user profile.  That means if no user is logged in then autom8 can't run.  The fix for this is simple.  Store the necessary files in program directory (C:\Program Files\AutoM8) instead of the user directory where they are now (C:\Users\&USERNAME&\AppData\Roaming\autom8).

Have you been using Tasker with X10? I've been using it for months but am new to X10. I've been thinking about opening a Tasker thread, I've made an imitation X10 app to control my lights with Tasker, but all my stuff is linux specific and I'm not sure many people would use them together.

EDIT: nevermind, that was a dumb question. I see you were talking about Tasker integration with this app. Sorry, I hadn't read the whole thread, I just clicked it because it was Android related.

Okay, I successfully got AutoM8 to run as a service in Windows 7.

I used FireDaemon (http://www.firedaemon.com/), which allows you to run any Windows program as a service.

The trick was to give the service your user credentials so it could run in your context even when you're not logged in.

just set up a dummy module called All lights OFF,
Then set a macro to run from that module turning all lights off.

Very cool.   #:)

Had it up and running in under 10 minutes.  Created dummy macros to control multiple devices.  Tested and works like a charm.  Good stuff.

I see an assortment of uses for this.

Kudos to the autom8 creator.

Can we get the source for the client and server side? I noticed that you had not addressed this in the faq, though you did say it was free to use.

Source would let us tweak it slightly to our liking.

Thanks for the answer, either way.

i got this mostly working on my phone. Was wondering if someone could help me with the security sensors.
I have the sensor trigger a dummy module and it causes the phone to say ALERT for that sensor, the problem i am having is i have a macro trigger the off command when the sensor is shut, but it doesnt seem to reset the alert on the phone. I guess i am doing something wrong but i dont know what that is .

Also on the dummy module if i just switch it on and off in ahp, it still only sends alert for on, still doesnt reset with the off command.

this occurs both over wifi and 4g network. the other lights seem to turn on when pushed on the screen of the phone but then the phone just sits there with a rotating circle in place of the on and off words and never updates either. I can only change the state of the light from what it was when i signed on 1 time.  So if it is on i can shut it off, but then nothing else because the status never changes.

Well after watching the youtube video on the autom8 program and security sensors, it looks like you have to manually reset the alarm on the phone once a sensor is breeched. I probably should have watched the video before posting the post before this one. :'

Well I guess I spoke too soon. It works great while I'm local to my home WiFi.  Beyond that I can't get it to connect.  Presume that this must be some sort of authentication issue.  I guess if I block my phone from my wireless hub I can try to debug.

Re: Those working on interfacing to a security system. I haven't tried that....but I'll get to it once I (hopefully) solve this connection issue.

You need to port forward to your computer. And then change the Ip address to your external IP. It has nothing to do with authentication.

Think of it this way: When you are inside your network (ie: connected to your wifi) you put your local computers address (ie: 192.168.1.108) and when the request for that address goes to your router it routes it internally, straight to the correct computer.

BUT when you are outside of your network (ie: 3g or whataburgers wifi) your internal ip address (192.168.1.108) doesn't mean anything, it can only be assigned to private networks (that is called a reserved ip address). You have to use your external ip address (ie: 68.105.192.15) but you still have one more problem. When you connect to that external IP address you will get your router. The router has to be told what to do with that connection. By default it must refuse all connections. You must tell it by port (6003) to send all traffic to that computer (192.168.1.108) on that port (6003). That is called Port Forwarding. You will have to look up how to do that on your specific equipment.

So the steps are: Change IP address on phone to external IP address then port forward port 6003 to 192.168.1.108 (or whatever your computer's internal ip address is) on your router.

Good Luck!

A transceiver (a TM751 or RR501) is used to convert RF signals to powerline signals.

I actually have the Activehome pro with the OnAlert plugin, so I can even see the different sensors there, I just cannot for the life of me figure out how to tell autom8 the addresses of these, without knowing if they are "N14" or something.

I figured out how to do Port Forwarding on my router.  Kind of a screwy UI (Buffalo/DD-WRT) but I got it done.

I configured the autom8 phone configuration to the WAN IP for the router instead of the local IP of the PC.  However, it still only works while local to my WiFi, i.e., can't get a connection when outside (or manually disconnect) from my wifi.

Any suggestions?

To those that may be interested in my findings and maybe others have already found this out.  I was having trouble getting the status of the modules to update. They would start out as off, on my screen of my cellphone. I was able to push the button and while sitting at home i would see the light come on, but the status of the phone just kept working and working and would never change to "ON".

I watched the video on the website and it seemed to work flawlessly, also about 2 pages back in this post someone else had the same problem except they just changed the letter of the module from a capitol to a lowercase, and that fixed the problem.  Well not for me.  What i ended up doing was in the new version of ahp it allows you to select the "old none soft start modules". I have chosen all these even though mine are the softstart ones.  Now the status updates fine and so far ahp seems to control them fine too.  I guess only time will tell if this will work for awhile or if something is going to crash soon.

Anyway that is what i did to fix my problem, I hope it helps someone else. This program and x10 was about the only reason i bought a smart phone, so glad it works now.

I don't think so but perhaps.  What I have been doing is disconnecting from my local network.  When I walk outside I can get a connection to another open network in my neighborhood and once that connection is established I try to connect on autom8. No joy.

I'll do a few screen grabs and send to your gmail account.  Thanks for the help.

was going to start a new thread but thought i would try here first.

I am currently using the autom8 program and really like its features. My question is this. I am wondering if there is a light switch like the current ws's that also sends a rf signal or one that alerts AHP to a change in status.

Right now i have a ws in the hallway that is controlled by a motion sensor so it turns on and off because the kids always forget to shut it off. When the motion sensor sends the signal the status changes in AHP to on or off and this change causes it to change on the screen of my smart phone letting me know at anytime whether the lights are on or off. But in other parts of the house with same switches, if i manually turn on the lights via the switch it never changes status in AHP thus it doesnt let me know if lights are on or off.

I guess i could use a wired in module and then install the (light switch with the remote control attached to it mod.) which by the way works great just dont have any wired in modules and looking for alternatives. So anyone know a wallswitch that updates status via local control.

Maybe you could try using some macro's and flags?  I did this so that I could arm and disarm the alarm with autom8.  I have a two dummy appliance modules that switch on and off via flag conditions. So if i arm with the home remote or key chain, they turn on the dummy module and set a flag. If i turn off that dummy module in autom8 it will disarm the alarm, or the reverse.  I think you could try the same method to get the flags set properly.

The x10 modules and switches don't report local status I have heard that some of the levitron ones do, I was going to start looking in to this in the near future.  Ahp will only update with rf and not from local control with standard x10 ws?? style switches. Even the pro models don't update locally.

I still dont think that the macros will work for local control.  Ahp doesn't see teh on or off signals when using local control.  Maybe some of the senior members will jump in with some ideas

I am currently using the autom8 program and really like its features.

I too like the program but can only get the appliance modules to work. If I select a lamp module, I get a spinning icon but it never changes nor turns on the light. I thought a slider would appear to set the level but it doesn't. Do light modules work for you? I have both an Droid X and a Tab Galaxy running Android 2.2. I did try to change it from a lamp to an appliance but that did not work...

Has anyone got lights to work?

Thanks.

Yes I have had the lights working for over a year now.  But I changed to x10 commander from melloware because of as you stated that there is no dim control.  now I use autom8 for my security modules and x10 commander for the rest of my appliances and lights.  I found that having pcc and x10 relayer helped with this as well becuase x10 relayer can resend the recieved codes to other computers on hte network.  most of the issues that I found when setting this up were related to my firewall and portforwarding.  and them blocking the signal

If you long press on the light module it will pop up a slider for brightness control.

Note you will only need to reinstall the Android client (v0.2.2), the server was unchanged.

According to the home page NO!
However since this uses the AHP SDK it maybe possible for it to work limited.
Since the CM19 is a RF only interface the software will be limited by that.

i just wanted to add my 2 cents since i didn't see this get answered and I am a autom8 user... (even tho it has been sadly abadoned without the fix for extended codes which all my lamps run on)

ok using autom8 out of yur home network another guy explained but lemme remap it out...

You have TWO ip addresses (if you have a modem and router)

yur modem gives one single computer internet by way of ethernet using the WAN IP
ok now all of use have a router, that uses that single ethernet and two distribute its on network
to that it creates its own IP called LAN IP... i think of them was WAN = world access network LAN = local area network.... ok for those of u who didnt approach port forwarding and were wondering why it doesnt work SHAME...

OK now on wifi u set the ip address (192.168.1.1) for autom8 an it automatically will connect bcuz u are on the network.. however.. if u want to connect off of wifi, portforwarding must be set up.... not just that they make it seems so easy....

THREE MAIN THINGS EVERY AUTOM8 USER SHOULD KNOW

ok but ill start with DYNDNS.... ok 99.99% of routers today run by way of DHCP... ok i dont remeber what the stands for but what i do remeber is that this means all of the IP address ( WAN & LAN ) are forever changing at an inconsistent rate. you can never make these static (consitent). However you can keep up with them. Make a free account at dyndns.org and host yur WAN ip address as a web url.. (example-dyndns.com) im not going to explain this any further but if yur taking my instructions DO IT.

sencond thing PORT FORWARDING... ok for those of u who dont no it u can access your routers setting (most of u) by typing 192.168.1.1 in yur "address" field in any browser once you type that in a user, and password entry will pop up if it hasnt already gotten configured by default the user and pass is admin... just type it in both fields and click ok...
ok so u got to the router page now try to find port forward on mine its listed under "applications and gaming".
youll notice fields like name, ports, ip, and a checkbox that says enable......... ok for most autom8 users they no they default ports are 7901 just use that as the range (type in both) now for the ip address go to the next topic.....

THIRD BUT MOST IMPORTANT..... those of u who attempted portforwarding good 4 u.. im sorry if u havent figured it out by now it took me a minute 2... ok remeber how i sed these ips are forever changing... these go for the computer on our network 2. ok u have autom8 set up to forward ports 7901 to yur comps ip which is 192.168.1.8 on the network.... which is fine autom8 is connected... until u disable yur network adapter, restart yur computer, or yur router decides to update it all on its own... and @ the point yur wondering.... WTF happened... the third topic SET UP YUR HA PC'S NETWORK STATIC..... yur network will still b DHCP and will still update all other devices inconsistently but as far as yur DHCP make it static ok to do that.... on yur HA PC go to network connections (depending on OS) then go to yur wireless card, right click, properties... now their shud b a drop down menu of differen service click [TCP/IP] now on that it says handle ip address automatically or manually... click manual.. enter the ip address u want 192.168.1.8 (the one that worked) yur subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 it entered that automatically for me.. now yur default gateway (routers ip) most of u thats 192.168.1.1.. next we go into DNS ok i had alot of trouble maintaining internet keeping up with my "internet providers" dns so now i just use google 100% reliable to that just like me in the DNS fields just enter 8.8.8.8 for the first one and 8.8.4.4 for the second one

ok i really hopes this helps autom8 users... im going to remap it out

most of u got the portforwarding right u just gotta remeber that it forwards that port to a specific ip address on yur network (aka yur HAPC ip address) an allows access to that specfic port routed to that speific ip address from outside (yur cellphones network)...

to those of u who c that im very scatterbrained im srry i hope u can follow this easily... if u need more help just reply to this.. i probably will never get off these forums lol take care ~gummibearz
