OK I have seen some wacky sales on the X10 pages.
Today's shows what is called "Certified Like New" modules. :'

Maybe that is where the Scratch and Dent stuff went.
Comments?

Nice.

I'd say it has better terms than the Scratch and Dent sale:
"A word from our uptight lawyers: Due to the nature of the Scratch and Dent Tent Sale items and their "Scratch and Dent" condition, we can only offer a 30-day refund for only the purchase price.
Beyond the 30-day refund, there is NO WARRANTY as to the function or merchantability of these products. These offers are not available in Canada."
...As opposed to:
"Certified Like New - 1-year replacement warranty included"
-
Yes scratch and dent was a poor comparison. ???
-
These offers are not available in Canada."
Hey, why not available in Canada? :(
Speaking of good deals, has anyone seen a really good deal on door/window sensors? I could use some more of them..... :'
-
Certified Like New is available in Canada. :)%
I've got a screaming deal over the phone for door/window sensors. Call 1-800-316-0075. Let them know you want some DS10A's and give them the promo code MT656
Thanks!

OK so I phoned in and gave the above info and they said that promo code MT656 is for the MINI-TIMER! Is there another promo code for the DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR aka DS10A?

My favorite DS-10A sale is the 7 for $19.99: http://www.x10.com/promotions/ds10a_ed_pk_1m_promo.html (http://www.x10.com/promotions/ds10a_ed_pk_1m_promo.html)
I would love for them to beat it in the "Name your price" event! $15 - Now that would be a deal! ;D

Hey thanks nybuck! That's the best ds10a deal I've seen....thanks!

I guess scratch and dent is preferable to SCratch and Sniff...Lol! Sorry couldn't help myself. But on a more serious note (if that's possible) I just got my software download from the "Certified" sale and am very optimistic. The price was rather surprising and I have high hopes that this is just the first of many purchases if my old technologically declined brain can make everything work. Oh, by the way...hello everyone! >! TD
PS: I'm going to use my "new" active home system for home/security and Holiday displays mostly I think...

Welcome to the forum TD!!! :)% Don't worry about being an old timer, most of us are! Yes x10 can be a lot of fun but, it can be a little trying at some times. But if you hang in there we at the forums are here to help! Between all of us there isn't anything we can't figure out! (I think anyway!) Again Welcome! :)%

I can answer the question Brian asked to open this thread... you might not like it or find it funny. I spoke with customer support online and at the 800 number. They not only wouldn't answer the question but left me with a whole lot more questions.
Here's what happened: I ordered the 50 dollar "certified like new activehome package". When it shipped this happened:
Qty Description Part
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Certified Like New: Appliance Module 3-Pin AM466SD
1 Scratch-n-Dent ActiveHome Pro Interface CM15SD
1 Certified Like New: PalmPad Remote HR12ASD
4 Certified Like New: SocketRocket Lamp Module LM15ASD
1 Certified Like New: Lamp Module LM465SD
1 EagleEye Motion Sensor MS14A
Do you see the scratch and dent? I called them about this. I asked if Scratch and dent was the same as like new. Neither even acknowledged the question. I asked repeatedly and was ignored. The closest I got to an answer was: When we run out of like new we substitute "Sc ratch n dent. So they're the same... no answer. So one is better and you use your referb leftovers when thwe like new are gone? No answer.
So is there a difference? I couldn't find out. I also asked how scratch could be the same as like new. No answer. I was finally directed to the "supervisors" who have not answered yet. I must admit to being very concerned. I must admit to feeling that I have been somehow downgraded and asked that they add something to make equal into equal since I didnt get like new. Why wouldnt they call it LIKE new if it is equal.? They also said not to worry about the one year like new being honored because thats what I ordered. I pointed out that all over their site they say that scratch and dent is thirty days then forget it while one year is one year. Dont worry they said. Can you send me a quick email so I have something in writing? Your site is very specific. No answer. I asked several times and was assured it would be ok if I needed help. So why is it so hard to send something that'll take 10 seconds so i can have my mind set at ease? Or at least point me to something on their site that states that. W@ow. Am I stressed. TD >*<
-
Thanks for the information.
Really doesn't sound that good.
If the CM15ASD was given {In Writing or email} the one year warranty then I would feel better myself.
Does the LM465SD go to full brightness?
I still have this feeling that someone from X10 must be at least scanning things here. Even if you can't get a response from them.
-
Support sent me an email apology which I accept. They referenced the warranty so my mind is at ease on that count. Whether they'll put it on their website for everyone who like=wise shares my fear, Im not sure. Still not completely thrilled but feel somewhat better. II HOPE THEY PUT IT UP SO EVERYONE CAN SEE IT. I suggested it but who knows. Answers would be better than an apology but I guess I'll just have to see how the hardware looks and works out. TD

Thanks for the update.
I am glad you got an email.
I would back it up somewhere safe. On the off chance you would need to use it.

techno,
I suspect X10 is saying "don't worry about it" because there is little difference between "Scratch and Dent" and "Certified Like New". X10 gets a LOT of returns. People with no experience with X10 automation, or X10 cameras, make large purchases expecting Lexus features and quality and are disappointed when they realize they paid for a Ford Focus and that's what they got. People do not fully read the ads and assume they can see four wireless camera video on a PC at the same time...or don't understand why one module in one room works fine but the same module in the adjoining room does not work at all. And they pack it all up and send it back. In most cases it is still good. X10 can resell it, they just can't sell it as "new".
My bet is, that is the source of both SnD and CN merchandise, along with "old stuff" that has been kicking around the warehouse. ...it's all the same and where buyers have a mix of SnD and CN, I doubt X10 would bother to figure out different warrenties. And I can pretty much guarantee you that there is no such thing as "re-furbushed". Unless it is an extremely simple problem, or unless a "bad run" in China has created a large number of faulty products, all needing the same fix, they simply won't take the time to "refurbish".
Think you are fretting over nothing.

What is a CM15ASD? I know what a CM15A is. A Google search for CM15ASD yields nothing.

OK, I just received my Certified Like New order.
It was 6-cameras with video receiver and camera remote bundle.
The items look good at first look, but they are all in sandwich bags with a label stuck to the bag - No boxes, no instructions... Overly unimpressive at first glance. Most of the bags say "Like New", and one is stamped "Scratch and Dent", lending credence to what they tried to tell 'technologicallydeclined'.
I will assume they all work - Maybe they had some boxes get water damaged... What to do? Put the cameras in bags and sell 'em at a discount... That's my guess.
Returns would be in the boxes. :'
-
I finally sorted through my order and tested it all out. Even more unimpressive. :(
Several of the cameras are missing the rubber plug over the ABCD switch. One camera and power supply do not work at all. The video receiver and about half the cameras have big gouges in them, as if they were installed and then someone hastily uninstalled them and returned them. My new conclusion is that they keep the boxes so that I don't resell them, or people returned the items without boxes.
My Conclusion: Pay the extra few dollars for the "New" products. I've seen nicer X10 cameras at garage sales. ;)

Thank you for passing on your findings.

What happens when it does not work? Modules don't turn OFF or ON?
Maybe you have an intermitent noise or coupling problem in your home(?).

Just an update on what to expect with warranty issues on Certified-Like-New:
I was talking to a sales rep today (one of the better ones) and she told me there is NO WARRANTY whatsoever on certified-like-new stuff. Even if they ship brand new stock in your certified-like-new order (because they ran out of certified like new stuff) there's no warranty and no 30-day money back guarantee.
So is it worth it? :-\
-
I just checked three of the Certified Like New Deals. Each deals web page clearly said "1 Year Replacement Warranty".
Some one better get their act together.

Well I am glad I brought some joy to the forums. ;D
While researching X10 complaints. I found a company that provides data on manufacturers. They indicated the typical X10 employees stay at X10. Was about two years.

The employee I was talking to has been there a lot longer than 2 years, and has been pretty good in the past. Why tell me there's no warranty when the web page says there is? Were they trying to discourage me from buying certified-like-new for a particular reason that's in their own best interest?
Maybe they've run out of all certified-like-new stuff and you get brand new stuff at the discount prices?? -:)

I don't picture X10 as being willfully deceitful. I just think the company has terrible internal communications, a frantic pace which prevents "doing the job right", and a quality director (if there is one) who doesn't have a clue how to fix things.
Having said that, I still like most of their products.

Wow, Dave W -
I couldn't have said that better myself. ;)
I think X10 took a moderately good product and, unlike Radio Shack, kept with it. As long as they can make a fast buck, they are just steaming ahead with as little overhead as possible. They get a steady supply of some stuff that sold well in the past, and they will push it, with as little change as they can, as long as it sells! ;)
-
I just think the company has terrible internal communications
You can say that again. Just to mention another issue, when I phoned the first sales rep she also told me that I could purchase an extended warranty anytime within 30 days of my purchase, so I didn't have to buy it right away.
Then, the next day with yet another sales rep, I'm told that NO, the extended warranty must be purchased immediately otherwise I can't get it. Does anyone know the true score on that one?
-
I can't answer that directly, but I have been told that you can buy it within 30 days as well. I never tried it.
I just want to add that, like most businesses, it depends who you get on the phone. You could hang up and call right back and get a different answer. I got a supervisor one time who was very helpful and reasonable. #:)
