Title: X10 Device Network Service could not start
Post by: bpbrun on January 23, 2011, 09:06:43 PM
I installed the AHP software just after Thanksgiving, ran my Christmas lights on it for the season.  I had started the software once to set everything up and downloaded everything to my CM15A.  Somewhere along the line the PC was rebooted and after that AHP software would never start again.  I am running 64 bit Windows Vista.

Originally I was getting the "Error Getting X10Net Interface" which led me to this forum.  I then started looking at my Services.  When I try to start the X10 Device Net Service I get Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.  I then took the advise of others on here to un-install and re-install.  I did that several times and still I get the same errors.  I did notice that after an un-install, the service does not get un-installed.  I also tried to follow an un-install procedure out on wiki to resolve this problem.  I have also went into the services and told it to start as the administrator user and plugged in the userid and password.  Is there a solution to this problem?  Is X10 listening?  This is kinda rediculous.

The solution is to uninstall AHP through the Add/Remove option in the Control Panel.  When you uninstall that way, you should get the option to delete everything including all folders AHP created in the install, so back up your .ahx files before uninstalling.

Then re-install AHP, you should have no more problems.

When I try to un-install it now it tells me "An error occured while trying to uninstall ActiveHome Pro.  It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove ActiveHome Pro from the Programs and Features List?"  I just installed this software.

What OS are you using?
What version of AHP are you at? The current version is 3.305.

I have downloaded the sw31a from the X10 website, so I assume this is the latest 3.305?  My OS is Vista 64Bit with SP1.

You didn't state if you had any plug-ins or if you have the SDK installed.
Sometimes (for what ever reason) these need to be installed then AHP.
After every thing is installed try this:
Stop the X10.Nets service
Then go to Program files (x86)/Common files/x10/common
remove all files from that folder
reinstall AHP

Are we talking about Microsoft SDK or the X10 SDK?  I tried to load the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library last night first and re-install the AHP.  No change.

x10 SDK

Loading the SDK and re-installing AHP still did not fix the problem.  The service will not start.  I found a post on here from a guy back in 2005 that referenced a utility called Dependency Walker to find all dependancies when a command is run.  If I use this utility to start the service it tells me that MSVCR100.DLL and MSVCP100.DLL are not resolved.  These files are nowhere on my system.  If this X10NET service requires these files then why are they not getting installed with the AHP software?  I am not even sure this is the problem, but it sure sounds like it at this point.  Where do I get these files?

Did you get your problem solved?

No.  An X10 Technician also email me and told me how to un-install and re-install.  Have probably done that 10 times now. The thing is... everybody keeps telling me this... but the service does not get un-installed and apparently re-installed and that seems to be my problem.  My service will not start.

After uninstalling, you still see the service there?
That sounds like a Windows issue, and you might need to manually remove the service from the registry.
I've done it before (not with AHP, but with other software), but I'll defer to those more knowledgeable than myself to give you the precise instructions. Remember, mucking around in the registry is dangerous, and you do it at your own risk.

Reading some other posts here, X10 purposely does not un-install the service because it is a shared resource for other X10 products, but I believe it to be the source of my problem.

Your not alone with this issue! This has been reported with XP, vista and now Windows7 B:(
See thread:
http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=19853.msg111546#msg111546
Short of a freesh install of windows I haven't been able to sort this out.
the AHX file that was running when your PC rebooted mostlikely is corupt and trying to use it again after getting AHP working again will result with the same issue.

As I posted in the other thread, you might try deleting (or renaming) your AHX file, and trying again. AHP SHOULD re-create a new file (perhaps complaining it can't find your other one first).
If that works, then your AHX file was the problem. If not, then it must be something else, and we keep poking around.

A bad AHX file may have created the issue (in my case) but that isn't what is the problem!
The problem is the X10Net file did something when AHP was shut down unexpectedly!
Any third party software also fails to work!

What happens when you try to restart the service?
You probably need to be running as an admin to do that.

Hey guys,
allow me to interject...
Although the x10 service may be fairly reliable running, it does sometimes
crash on my system. I've solved that by going into the services control
panel and modifying the Recovery tab options to 'Restart the Service' upon
failure (set all dropdowns to restart).
You've got other options on that tab depending on OS version.

Where will I find this AHX file on Vista?

thanks troll334
In this case it just causes the error to appear each time the X10net tries to start. ::) :'
Noam  restarting service results in same error.

What permissions are set on the folders where AHP is installed, as well as where the AHX file is stored?

What user is the service set to run as?

What version of AHP are you running?

Good questions but irrelevant! Remember these systems were working prior to a program forced stoppage either with a Task manager stopage or a improper PC shut down due to a quick power outage or somethig unforseen.
There were no permissions set for the AHP folder
Service was set to autostart.
I'm using the latest version 3.305 but this issue seems to have started with the introduction of the phone apps as that's when I first experienced it I think version 3.293

Okay, is there anything in the Windows event logs that might give a clue as to why it won't start?

I'm not sure which logs your refereing to!
The error report log might be a clue if We knew what to look for. ::) :'

Right-click 'My Computer'
Choose 'Manage'
This varies depending on OS but look for 'Event Viewer'
Expand it
Look for Window Logs (vista and 7) and expand
Review the Application, Security, and System Logs around the time of the failure.
And, by the way, although unusual, windows permissions settings can become
corrupt if the OS is abnormally terminated or if an errant application was accessing
the files/folders at the time of the trouble. Again, not too frequent an occurance, but...

Okay they don't help only stating that errors ocurred
Error Dcom reports "the server{long number} did not register with DCom within the required timeout"
 failed and system
Error System Control manager reports " the X10 DeviceNetwork Service service terminated unexpectedly it has done this 2 times"

doesn't tell me anything I don't already Know! ::) :'

Scrolling down to other System Control Manager errors I find the error " x10 DeviceNetwork Service has hung on Starting"

Okay, Why is it geting hung up?  ::) :'
Funny this issues was first apparent with the first new build of the X10net  ??? At least for me!
I've just been able to recreate events that lead up to this!
And not just on XP

Okay, I'm stumped on this one.
you might try posting on their Facebook page, and maybe ask them to pass it along to the developers.

I don't use Facebook but did fire off some emails!
Someone else may post to facebook and point them to this or one of the other threads posted on this topic!
The big problem is anyone using the newer X10 net versions of AHP will suffer from this at some point!
I've proved this is the new X10net by loading the old SDK which doesn't use the new x10nets it works (no errors and programs created to use the old X10 nets also work) ;)
Humm  -:) never tried loading a old version of AHP guess thats next!
 ??? ::)
Where is my 3.228  rofl

It almost sounds like something got corrupted in the x10nets service, and reinstalling isn't replacing the file, since the file properties are the same.

Did installing the older SDK replace the x10nets.dll? Does the newer AHP open, with the older SDK installed?

I know the SDK was updated on 1/21/2011. Is that the one you were using before?

You can certainly try reinstalling that version of the SDK, which SHOULD replace the x10net.dll with the latest one, and see if that makes any difference.

It is entirely possible that there is a version mismatch somewhere in one of the files, and that might be enough to correct it. (then again, it might not).

I just posted to FaceBook, asking the developers to take a look at this thread, and the other one (looks like the same issue, maybe we need to merge them into one).
