Title: 8 cameras, wired, 1028*944 res with dvd and 60' wire, $ 280
Post by: mike on August 16, 2011, 07:19:57 PM
Not sure if anyone wants to hear but after having 8 wireless x10 cam up for a few years, I finally bought a dvd motion system.  what a difference.  I can see license plates at 30', night vision IR, motion software on the pix that really works, email me if motion, 3g to phone, internet pix live that you can see, 500gb hd good for 2 weeks then rewrites automatically.  cant believe I put up with the x10 so long!  what a world of difference!  this system rocks.

So, are you bashing X10? or are you saying something made our system work better?

Where can I get info on the dvd motion system? I have been trying since beginning of June to get my 4 camera's to work. I have 3 working but unable to get the 4th camera to work. When I use the remote, the 4 camera's work fine, but when I try to go from camera to camera using my cell phone or use the AHP app on my computer without the remote, only 3 camera's will come in. Thanks!

No bashing.  I have used X10 to turn stuff lites on and off since it seems around 1970, so I would not bash.

I simply pointed out perhaps others may want to consider other than X10 for cameras.  I have one $ 70 IP camera that is HD and can zoom to a license plate at 300 yards.  I figured as a dedicated X10 owner and user I owed it to my fellow users to suggest there is life outside of, but in addition to, X10 - that happens to WORK for cameras and recording.  NO bash intended.  Sometimes life just must go on.  I will look later tonight for the brand and stuff to post for those who expressed interest in a low cost alternative video thing.

ebay and such my unit I am happy with if you wish:  zmodo.com   8 camera system with remote and internet capability.

Im not seeing anything with that resolution. How about some model numbers or a link to where you ordered. And some screenshots for sure.

There is going to be a huge improvement with a wired system over RV, and major improvement with that high of resolution, but a lot of it also falls into your recording settings and capacity.

Still I want to see what you are talking about for sure!

guess this really shud be in non-x10 camera forum.....  but...  i cannot do justice to the pix I get cuz my phone took 640x480 pix of the screen shots!  I would give access to the web based pix - but I have not yet figured out how to make that work.  if anyone can help me.....

anyway, here are a couple pix showing the resolution of those ......  so i cant figure out how to attach a pix here either.... so here is a weblink to some pix showing the resolution is hi:

i dont know how to do this either but here are the snapshots I took FWIW:

That listing shows 420 horizontal resolution, as you know, a HECK of a downgrade from 944. I'll check around though based on the information you provided, however 1028*944 doesnt sound right, resolutions should be in the neighborhood of 4:3, that's more like 10:9.1, almost a square image.

Can you post a screenshot or picture of the DVR screen so we can get an idea of the clarity, Im really looking for cameras that can read a license plate from 30 feet.

My brother bought a Zmodo I think, off woot a while back, he's not overly thrilled with the clarity, and as I recall, the FPS was only half was it was supposed to be, which divided by 8 cameras ended up pretty low.

I also have a hi end IP camera I bought this is H.264, 15 frames/sec, 1Mbps compression, 1280x1024.  It is better than the zmodo ones, but they are way better than the x10 resolution.  I believe the 1000x900 or whatever it was.  I will take a license plate out 30 feet and take a pic of it to see what it does....

Id really like a part number and ballpark price on that. I think I want one high rez, possibly PTZ and 3-4 standard PTZ. I have an airsight that will work amazing for my indoor, but I want one on the driveway, another on the front of the house and one on the back.

Of course I have two floodcams (one still in the box) one regular commercial security camera, one really nice camera with high night visibility, (not IR but high end high sensitivity sensor), a heated security housing and a ton of coax and a DVR that I would have to mothball, but I think it would be worth it.

update in case anyone is interested in low cost wired cameras with dvd and network stuff....  4 cameras $ 120 while they last.  I have been happy with them.  I think the reported 1028x944 res reported on the dvr is prob not correct and the stated 656x492 pixels is...  but it is such higher resolution than any of my old x10 cameras it seems HD :)

I suspect the system capability is 1024x944 (or whatver it is) but the cameras can only produce something less than that, still good though!

I bought the 8-input DVR with 4 wired IR-capable cams when they came around for $125-140 (I forget).  Very similar to Ben's deal.  Zmodo as well.

I will say that there are different models out there.  You will need to purchase a hard drive for either the 4 or 8-camera DVR mentioned.  Depending on the size you buy, that could be an additional $100.  Some models have a fan, which is better for hard drive life, as it is constantly spinning/recording, even in motion-detect mode.  As it detects motion, it actually saves a few seconds before the motion, allowing you to save the act in its entirety.  Also, some have audio recording with the video.  The cheaper ones may have one or no audio inputs.
