The Airpad Manual, such as it is, mentions a "3G Dongle". Apparently for some sort of wireless transmission, I assume. What is it , (REALLY!), and how/where does one acquire one?

It's a small device that plugs into the USB port (they typically look like USB thumb drives). They allow you to get Internet access from 3G networks on your device.
The dongle is usually sold as part of a monthly data plan. I know they're available from all major carriers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) There may be some other alternatives, as well.

unfortunatly, 3g Dongles do not work with the Android OS. We are working on fixing the manual. However, for mobile internet I suggest mobile wifi hotspots. Some smartphones have the ability to create hotspot such as the HTC Evo 4g, you can also get a hotspot device such as http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneOverviewByDevice&deviceCategoryId=13
