Title: Android Market Missing
Post by: will6103 on October 16, 2011, 12:10:07 AM
I just received my Airpad today. The instructions say I should have the android market already installed but all I can locate is the APK installer. I tried to installed the market from my micro SD and it will ask me to create/add my google account but when I select yes it just crashes back to the desktop. Am I missing something or is not installed in the new batch of Airpads?

I think it should be there for you (I just received my replacement AirPad a few days ago so I assume we would have the same things).  Are you looking under "M" (for "Market") rather than "A" for "Android Market"?

Regardless, the first thing I would try is to add my Google account outside of the Market (please forgive me if you already know this stuff- I just wrote this assuming you're new to Android).  To do this, from the home screen, click the menu button -> Settings -> Accounts & sync -> add account.  For this to work, however, the date and time must be accurate.  I mention this because several people (including myself) have experienced a lot of problems regarding the date/time.  You can set the date and time under menu -> Settings -> Date & time.  Then you can "Set date", "Select time zone", and "Set time" (in that order).

Once you verify the date and time is right, add your Google account, and then verified that the Market isn't listed in the app drawer under "M", perhaps what you're trying to do will work?

Hope this helps!   :)

I have tried to correct the time and tried to add my google account. When I go into accounts and try to add my account it only says add an exchange account. I do not see an option there to add a google account.

hmm.. wacky.  I suppose one option would be to do a complete factory reset.  Not sure how receptive you'd be to that idea though.  But that's what I'd do, I think.

Thanks for the suggestion but that was one of the first things I did but still no go. I can add the market but my next problem is adding my google account. When I go into accounts and tap on add account it takes me right to add an exchange account.........??????? I was able to add my google account to the email client with no problems but it doesn't let me do it anywhere else.

I called technical support and they say the Android Market is not suppose to be installed on the airpads. They also said there manual is old and outdated because it says you should have access to the Market. They now tell me you can only use the Amazon app store.........wtf??????

Well I am new to all of this as this is my first Android OS device.  All I did was set up my GMAIL account   and then with AirPad connected by WiFi I went to the Apps Store (Goggle) on my computer  selected an App I wanted  clicked on Install and it installed. I have installed about 12 Apps over the last three week like this and only had two which I had to Install twice as they did not show up on the AP the first time.

I find it easier to browse the Apps store on my computer than the AP and thus my reason for using this aproach.

There is an AirPad Manual in the X10 manuals area.
It has a file date if 10/17/2011.
They may have put a later revision on line today.

I notice that, as of right now, there's no manual for the AirPad on this page: http://www.x10.com/support/support_manuals.htm

Are they're blocking the market/google accounts now?  That would absolutely make it a no-go in my book; I hope that's not the case!  Why oh why would they do that?

Sorry for the problem.
I was looking in the X10 FTP sites manuals area and it may not be on the X10 manuals pages of support.
I found the link in the Tablet section of the wiki.

They did just change the manual that was online. The one that is currently there was not there this morning or last week. It looks like I will most likely be sending mine back if I can not have the android market. That is the whole reason why I waited for this tablet and I didn't choose another one.

They did indeed change the section of the maual on downloading Apps from the Adroid Market to Amazon ,who knows what is going on? My Android Market still works as I described above as I just  downloaded one to be  to  sure.

I read a post a week or so ago where someone was complaining that the Droid Market being installed was preventing him from downloading Apps from Amazon which he had paid for in the past.

Thank you for the confirmation on the changes.
I lost the older copy I had archived by not moving it to my X10 folder from where I put all new files from downloading.  ???

Well I guess I am going to be sending this back. It defeats the purpose to sell an android device without the android market.....IMHO...but that might just be me. I think it was a bad move to not include it. Apps in the Amazon app store are usually always several versions behind the same apps in the market.

I checked my latest email Splash Ad for the AirPad and noticed it also references the Amazon Apps market now. I guess the real question is why the change when the AP has only been available in somewhat limited quanities for only a little over a month now? Perhaps they are trying to go head to head with the Fire or perhaps they had a marketing agrement with Goggle and Amazon made they a better offer.

Would be nice for X-10 to clear this issue up but my guess is that is not very likely to happen. Now I wonder if the new update they are working on is to in part remove the Goggle Apps Market from the AP?

Interesting development.... The Android OS may be free and open source.  However Youtube, Market, Maps, etc are considered proprietary.  They are known as the "google experience apps".  These apps (like Market) require a license from Google Inc

Years back the CyanogenMod folks received cease and desist letter from Google for distributing these proprietary apps.  See http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/What_is_CyanogenMod (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/What_is_CyanogenMod)  under Licensing Controversy to see how they got around this.

The previous comments and discussion above  implies possible licensing problems.

At the time most of us bought the AirPad, it was marketed as having the Android Market. If it comes to pass that we're no longer able to use the Android Market, then I believe this would constitute false advertising. Then hopefully the company would step up find an agreeable way to compensate us for this error, whether it be offering returns past the 30 day window, partial refunds, etc.

I guess the on sale page has not been updated yet.
I just looked and it says Official Google Android Market and mentions Google Maps.  ::)  :'

The main AirPad page seems to be updated.

Interesting topic and quite a concern. I received an early AP and so have market installed and just checked with an update of existing apps and all is well with mine. Doesn't mean that later models will have the same results however. I do recall cyanogen having problems with installing the market and had to install an optional "gapps" in order for market to work.  Wonder if this is a possible fix for those willing to put in the work, but I can understand that the AP advantage was everything working right out of the box.  Any official word from X10 yet?

If Airpad develops a dedicated following... and in that group is sharp developer willing to spend the time, then he/she could  create an update to install the google experience.  I know this because I was previous owner of Pandigital Novel which never had market and was slow but several developers  did their magic.  Google seems to look the other way.

And if Airpad is an exact import of the Lanyu 910 http://en.sz-lanyu.com/EN/Product-117.html (http://en.sz-lanyu.com/EN/Product-117.html), then you should be able to get an update directly from the manufacturer. Chinese manufacturers/developers do not have strong history of complying with intellectually property rights.  Then again, maybe they will start.

I was finally able to find a way around my problem. After many hours of searching and trial/error I was able to find software and an old AP image that I was able to flash on to my new AP. I was on the brink of sending it back and going to something else but now that I was able to get all of the google apps back I am going to keep it. It is a pain in the rear to flash the rom but if you want all of the google apps back it is your only choice other then getting a different tablet........

So they did change the image in the new ones.

I suppose this means those of us with the earlier software be left with a tough choice if they actually live up to their promises to give us an Ice Cream Sandwich release: upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich and live without the Google Apps, or stay on Gingerbread and keep the Google Apps.

But let's be honest here...despite their promises, it seems incredibly unlikely that they'll actually bother with an official Ice Cream Sandwich release.

I knew it was a $200 gamble when I bought this. Looks like I lost.

I can't believe I did not do enough research before placing my order and waiting over three weeks for delivery. Could have likely had one sooner, for less cost and in theory 11 additional months warranty.

Edit

On second thought .

The link I posted is free shipping for a Tablet which sure appeasrs to be exactly the same as the Air Pad.

X-10 charges $30 extra shipping to Canada according to post here.
Many have waited for 3 weeks or longer for an Air Pad and in most cases thier CC was charged at time order was placed,I know mine was.

The $200 Fire does not have HDMI and a few other feactures of the AP.  Much of the Amazon spec. /hype is just that and is still a month or more away.. Free Cloud Storage  but that is only for Amazon stuff, reminds me of the Free BlockBoster offer with a new Dish Network subscription. BlockBuster is free for 3 month only and the cost of Dish Net doubles after the first 12 months and that is a 24 month contract.

X-10 AirPad is nice but it looks like it is just another mass produced device sold under different names  with thier Logo on it  . It also looks like they may have not cleared the OEM Apps with Goggle and thus had to make what many consider a major change.

If you received an AirPad after the middle of Oct. it can not use the Android market unless you reflash the ROM to _001 (same as original) or _002  (rooted ver. of original).

There are many post on Rooting.

You posted in the Android Market Missing Thread so I assumed your Airpad did not come with Android Market App installed. The first ones shipped did have it and then  starting around mid Oct. they no longer had the Android Market. The early ones had Rom _001  and the later ones _004 which can not have the Android Market installed in them.As per the current ads and instructions you must get Apps from the Amazon Market.

Have you read this whole thread and perhaps searched for post on Root  / Rooting?

Flashing the ROM is a bit of work and not really a simple task. Some have gone to this trouble  to either get the original _001 ROM which has the Android Market ,some flash to  _002 which also has the Android Market plus if fully Rooted.

Here is a link if you care to have a go at it.

Could X-10 make their ads any more confusing?

Early (pre mid Oct) Air pads had Android Market on them. Later / present ones do not or do they once again?

I should add for clarification that Android Apps are available for the current AP but from Non Market places such as Amazon not from the Android Market ,Goggle.

Hey there, Thanks for taking the time to write in. According to our records, ...
Android Market Support
1:56 PM (19 hours ago)

Thanks for taking the time to write in. According to our records, the device you're using isn't supported for use with Android Market at this time. For additional details, please see this complete list of supported devices:

http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?answer=1727131

The Android operating system is open source, which means any device manufacturer is free to use Android on its devices. However, Android Market is an application created by Google that's only made available to devices that pass Google’s compatibility requirements. In addition, manufacturers must obtain a license from Google in order to install Android Market on their devices.

For more information about the Android Compatibility Program, please visit:

http://source.android.com/compatibility/index.html

If you have any further questions, I recommend contacting the manufacturer of your device directly. Have a lovely day.

Regards,

Christine

So I understand this.  I just purchased an Airpad X, not yet to my home, still being delivered by FedEx sometime today.  When I get the Airpad I will not have access to android market which is why I purchased the item in the first place.  My kids love the apps on the market and this was to get them off my Android phone.  Thanks X10.  By the way, I may not even open the box before sending it back from what I have seen on this board.  Very much down in the dumps.

You might look into the possibility of refusing delivery.  Make sure you cover all grounds ie understand any consequences.

Do not open the box if you decide to return it.
In the fine print at the bottom of the sales page. There is a 15% restocking fee for opened nondefective units.

The very first AirPads had the Goggle Android Market APP preinstalled  but non of the Air pads have had this since approx. Mid. Oct..

How to get APPs from Amozon has been covered several times and some even prefer this. Some have issues due to their location (non USA).

IMO The X-10 Pads have been yet another case of poor marketing and mass confussion. I have one of the early 4" Air Pads and it works well but fact is that I paid $40 to much for it. Live and learn as they say.

I second the suggestion to refuse delivery. That way, you don't have to deal with an RMA, or have to pay return shipping or anything.
Just refuse delivery, and call X10 to let them know you refused delivery, and you want a refund.
Track the status of it, and start bugging them for your refund as soon as you see it arrive back at X10.

From what I've been able to gather licences are issued to the manufactures. Not individuals
It is also stated there is no restrictions on an individual from installing it on their device.
The problem is finding a way to do it!  ::) :'
I suspect installing an old version from a flash drive maybe the way to do it since the sites tend to look at the device IDs.
I've found such a version and have a link posted on my forum. ;)

I got one of these AP 7" for my daughter and noticed the missing Market. I added the Amazon App Market and made my daughter swear not to order paid apps without checking with me first. Since my nine year old does not have a credit card I had to use mine. My daughter was disapointed because the Amazon App Market does not have all the apps of the Android Market.

While pondering this I did a little looking and found that you can open a browser and go to market.android.com, sign in with an account and it is the same as having the Android Market installed. I set up a shortcut on my daughters home screen and other than "it looks different" she has loved it and found all her apps.

I read through the entire topic and noticed that no one posted this so I thought I would share with the group.

When you open the amazon market go to the menu icon and you change the setting to enable parental control over purchases.
Also you can set a passcode instead of your password

The Airpad X is a rebadge of the Zenithink ZT280 C91.  Look at the barcode on the case.  Pay special attention to whether the code includes 2N or 3N. Then go to Zenithink's China website and you can download installs that include market.  I just loaded their latest gingerbread for the 2n model and it is great.
