which should I use?  I want to use it to watch home 50 miles away.

I need a little more info to help you out here.  What type of cameras are you using and what do you want them to be able to do.   I would suggest looking into blue iris it has some awesome features and it is inexpensively priced.  it offers a web server that can be accessed from anywhere you have internet.

Sorry but I'm not a big fan of x10 cams or their software for them.
