The referenced article doesn't go into much detail but the ability to monitor one's energy usage is made possible by the smart meters being installed by most power companies. almost all of them have ZigBee capability built-in although they may not include the hardware necessary for implementation. It's a shame that most power companies are not making it easier for the homeowner/renter to tap into the datastream.
