I have no idea as far as the proper code for your Onkyo gear but some manufacturers use the same code for On & Off - if Off, it turns on and vice versa. It might be worth a try here.

The IR34A in the learing mode. Uses a sensor in the back of the remote.
Are you pointing the sender of the original remote at the rear of the IR34A?

I have also found the exact pointing of some remotes at the back can be touchy.
I have had to raise or lower the original remote or IR34A. To hit the IR34As IR receiver squarely. In some cases.

thank you. I was pointing at the front of the remote.  now it takes the power setting, but will only turn on not off.  I solved the problem by putting in the off code in another place.  Thanks for the help. the instructions do not tell you to put the remote at the back.  now how do you macro on all the devices at once without reprogramming. :)% :)% :)% :)%

Does the original remote have a separate On and Off button?

no. it is just a work around.  can u help in putting in the macros.
1. do u have to input all the power codes manually or by the learning mode.
all the power buttons are in with everything working.  would be nice to have a macro that turns them all on. do we have to manually learn from orginal remote to do macro.  also what key decides the macro

I have never done any macros on an IR34A so I can't be of any assistance on that.
You may find some added help in the X10 knowledgebase in the Icon remotes area.

I am now a pro with everyones help. I can program everything and do the macros. took some time, but everything works.  They need help in writing down the methodology for doing their programing of their remote.  customer service not very good.  It is pretty straight forward
1. try your items
2 if not work go to learn process and place your remote to the BACK OF THE X10 AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SCREEN
3 for macros, you have to use sides of one of the devices. pick a number and macro them throught the learning processes.  just make sure you change name to macro and then do the macros to the name.
4. on onkyo you have to do the work around by setting up another device and put the off button on it.  seems to be a different code.

hope this short note helps other beginners.
