Title: Calculating total wattage with Dimmable LED Bulbs.
Post by: Brian H on August 01, 2012, 04:17:51 PM
I recently found some interesting information on dimmable LED Lighting.
When being used with dimmer switches and lamp modules. X10 two wire switches don't work with dimmable LEDs so this doesn't apply to them.
Even if they electrically may use 10 watts of power. Have to be counted as 75 watts to even 115 watts towards a dimmers ratings.
This is due to inrush current and repetitive current peaks.
I have attached a Cree information sheet for their CR6. It says use 75 watts for the calculations.
The Lighting Science 6" Glimpse down light LED says count it as 115 watts.

My Philips EnduraLED Bulbs technical information sheet. Does not specify the reason but says don't go above 10% of the dimmer being used wattage rating.

Found another white paper mentioned on the UDI Forums.
