Title: XX40A
Post by: Mic_ on March 03, 2013, 11:56:03 AM
My XX40A Camera only transmits black and white pictures; any ideas why I don't get color pictures? I also have issues viewing the camera from my smart phone; when I log in from my smart phone (from outside the house) I get nothing. When I log in from my smart phone (inside the house) I do get the camera; why don't I get the camera when I am outside the house?

To view your cam outside you have to use the  DDNS IPaddress of the camera
Its on a sticker on your camera or in the camera software device settings.

Try your cell phone using the same link above.

if you are using the DDNS ADDRESS and still have problems
check your device settings and see if your ddns status shows SUCCEED or FAILED.

The color just came back to the Camara. I suppose it was just one of those things. Is the DDNS server the same as what pops up in the IP camera tool box?

When I check In Systems; DDNS status, I see "Gipcam.com" is this outdated? Do I need to get in touch with X10 to get this changed? Thanks

Yes gipcam.com is the DDNS. are there any numbers before the gipcam.com?

i believe it is out dated. i ve seen some replies that airsight.net is being replace as the DDNS.
under system>device status> where is shows your DDNS Address is it failed or shows succeed like mine

  DDNS Status   xipcam.com  Succeed  http://e7489.xipcam.com

if you need one, you can go to DYNDNS.COM and signup for one. They will give you a free 14 trial period.

Thaks for the info. Yes, my DDNS.com shows succeed. There are numbers in front of the gipcam.com
On another note, I called X10 yesterday to find out about the DDNS issue and they told me that I need to set up port forwarding. They also gave me a 1-800 number to contact their tech support, Monday through Friday. I don't get this, set up port forwarding thing, since Iwas able to view my camera with my smart phone (While out of the house) a few months back. To me, now that I have info from this forum, I had success until the gipcam.com shut down.

Sorry; what I actually have in my DDNS status box states: gipcam.com Succeed http://K6837.gipcam.com

As I stated, all I had to do a few months ago (While away from home, using my smart phone) was to type in the ip address of the camera, shown on my home computer screen address bar, and I would get my camera. This was easy and I was amazed that it worked as advertised...Now, I have his this snag

Another question, my XX40A Firmware version is 17.35.2.41     Is there a newer version? If so, has anyone tried it? If there is, is there any benefit to upgrading? If there is a newer version, and you tried it, did it create problems for you, or, did it install and run seemlessly with your system? Thanks

Finally, I experience color loss on my camera from time to time. The color then magically returns; anyone experience this? Is it the bright sunshine that washes the color out? I did purchase a refurb "like new" cam from X10; I would like to believe that the camera itself is ok...

I purchased my camera back in Nov 2012 and had to set up portforwarding to view my camera away from home over the internet.

This site can show you how to portforward any type router at http://portforwarding.com

Just look for your router type/model.

I was told by x10 repair this year that the firmware version for the xx40a is UP-TO-DATE.

I had no need to try and download since my xx40a is working fine.

Color wash out... Yes it happens to my camera daily, usually going into the sunset hours... its not a long wash-out but it could make you think something is wrong.

Mic,

The color will wash out from 2 different things - being in overly bright light or being in an area that is dark enough to put the camera into night vision mode. When the camera is in night vision mode, it will switch to a black and white image to increase the camera's image quality in a low light situation. Both of these are normal.

There is no new firmware for the XX40A.

If you are having problems with a gipcam or xipcam DDNS address, you can call tech support at 800-675-3044 and they can change the address to a airsight DDNS address.

I have "Great" news...Please share this with all in the Community, and on other areas dealing with difficult issues regarding X10 Cameras. I just completed (with the help of and X10 Tech name Bill) port forwarding for my XX40 Airsight Camera. Bill called me, three consecutive days, to guide me through the port forwarding process. I have "NEVER" experienced this kind of positive, patient, and expert assistance from anyone, including paid services, before. Hats off to Bill!

Let me pass on some information here that can be helpfull, regarding forwarding a camera port, via a 2wire modem (ATT) type. The modem log-in (my case) was on the side of the modem box. It is called (in my case) the Modem Device Access Code.

Another thing; when I started the port forwarding process, after logging in to my modem, firewall tab-I had to select applications and pinholes...Since this area was not highlighted (like most selectable items are) I got hung up. You can place the mouse directly on pinholes and Applications and you will see that you can double click on it to advance.

finally; if you need to view your camera on your smart phone at home, type in the address (internal ip) as shown in the browser along with the (colon ) and the port that you forwarded ie192.178.3.251:followed by whatever the port number is. All this info will be in your browser when you bring your camera up at home.

When you are away from home using 3 or 4G smart phone; type in your public IP (you can find this by typing "What is my IP" in your browser) folowed by (Colon) and your port number that you forwarded

I don't think I would have been able to complete the port forwarding process without Bill...I will try to do this on my own when my next camera arrives in the mail...Wish me luck. Hope this info helps ...

Thats great....

On the same note: I have the same camera as you do but with a ARRIS cable modem and Linksys router and was able to do PORTFORWARD.COM to learn how.

For me to view over my cell phone, i can use the xipcam.com ddns for the camera.
I also use IP cam viewer app, i like it better than having to open a browser and type the camera address. Just click on the IP camera app and up pops the camera.

I didn't have to change port numbers and use the default.

Does anyone know if one can access Airsight cams on a computer outside the home computer? How is it done if at all possible?

When I open my camera tools software, it allsow me to view single or multiple cams (in the same window) while I am at home; would I be able to view all of my airsight cameras while away from home in one window?

Is there a software like I watch out pro, for airsight cameras?

As explained earlier in this thread, in order to view the camera remotely you will have to properly set up port forwarding in your router - and every router is different and it does require that you have a moderate level of networking knowledge.

If you cannot do this yourself, you may want to enlist the help of somebody that understands networking principles. Once it is set up, it should work properly without any further headaches.

You can view multiple cameras at the same time remotely.

Thanks all for the great info. Got everything set up fine now.
Question to anyone with the XX40A Camera; when you log in from a smart phone, do you get (buffeting) buffering?
I don't get a smooth, steady stream at all; any ideas? I this normal?

Mic

I just used my android phones 4g network to answer your question.. I don't really get buffering even using 4g.

Are you using your phone wifi or cell network? either way a lot can depend on how many people are on the internet.

I have noticed on my computer during the day 8am to 12noon NYC time, my video can pause for a while on one computer, and still be streaming on another computer.. I think this is internet traffic with all the computers ( home, work, etc) being connected to the internet.  During the late afternoon hours it doesn't happen at all.

I normally have two computers with the camera's video going, checking out a youtube video, xbox gaming, my cellphone, my daughter cellphone and ipad all connected to the internet at the same time.

Even at home. sometimes very rarely during the day if you watch your camera long enough and there is constant traffic going by it will have pausing at times.

I usually have two computers running at the same, both showing my camera video and where one video would freeze the movement.. the other video is normal.

My camera is connected POE 24/7.

POE = POWER OVER ETHERNET

the poe kit allows you to connect your camera thru your router. Your camera is online 24/7/365. It is not connected wirelessly to your router.

The advantage is ... you may not have a outlet where you mount your camera and/or the camera is too far from your router to work wirelessly.

You would also need a cat5 cable ( 25, 50, 100 feet lengths), depending on the distance from where your mounted camera is and your router to connect to the poe kit.

I can't say for the xx41A but I have two xx40A and one xx59A cameras and all three work with the camviewer software. The xx59A camera came with its own ip camera tool software.

I found out, The IP camera tool does recognize other IP cameras in the same software.

Question; I did not connect my XX40A directly to the modem first before I tried it out wirelessly...I hooked it up through a plug in, eathernet device. The camera work fine through said device; however, when there is a power blip, the eathernet device has to be reset. The trouble is, I am not always home to reset said device. Is there any way to disconnect the eathernet cable from the camera and have my modem pick it up wirelessly?

I only ask this because I have said camera mounted and it would be a bit of a chore to disconnect it and go through the direct Modem connect procedure.

Finally, if I have no choice but to go through the direct modem connect, will I have to reset the port forwarding, etc for said camera?

when you tried wirelessly... which ip address did you use?

EXAMPLE: if you use the ip address 192.x.x.x/port number when the camera is wired... did you use the same ip address?

Did you try using the cameras DDNS IP address wirelessly?
it should be a airsight.net ip address.

for example.. my ddns.ip address is e7489.xipcam..

What I have had success with (Like the instructions state) is to connect the camera directly to the modem; after the modem recognize the camera, I then disconnect it and the modem then searches and recognizes the camera. This did not happen in this case and I don't know why.

I used the procedures "I mentioned above" to connect to another Ip camera and it works as advertised. Could this camera malfunction be because I did not first set up the XX40A camera wired first? I do have it connected to a plug in ethernet adapter at the moment and it works fine, both at home and away from home.

Not to be a wise guy .. but you answered your own question when you followed the instructions correctly.

There could be any number of reasons.. sometimes just turning things off.. letting them sit for a while to discharge static electricity and rebooting can make things work,

I like to reboot sometimes after downloading something new. or run my tune up program.. or turn off anti virus software.. etc etc.

Let me restate what I need to know; Has anyone experienced the same issues I did by not first connecting to the MODEM in the wired mode first? Secondly, If you did this (Connected wirelessly before you connected wired first) did you get everything working right when you reversed things; wired, then wireless?

I wouldn't think it would work FIRST WIRELESSLY since it would have to get information from your router/computer to produce an IP Address for the camera....especially if theres others people routers in the area and need to setup its own ipaddress.

I mentioned an issue of color wash out with the XX40a and it was stated that sunlight causes this. While I found this to be generally true; this camera does this at times when the sunlight is not an issue. It appears that the camera forget to switch back from the night time mode at times. It does not happen very long when it does, so, I suppose I will have to live with it...

After trial and error, regarding color wash out issues...I discovered that I do not have color wash out issues...The camera simply does not switch from the night time mode; this happens more often than not. I simply hard reset the (Turned off and turned back on) computer and camera. This cleared the problem and the camera switched to day time mode. I experienced the issues again...This time I plugged the camera out and plugged it back in; this worked...Bottom line; I probably have a faulty camera...I did purchase a refurbed one. Since, I believed there was nothing to be done about the issue; I lived with it. Now that I believe that I have the root cause of the issue nailed down, I find myself out of the warranty period. I pass this on so others will not have to settle...

Boomer, I think it worth a shot to call X10 and explain what happened. Obviously the camera was not "certified like new" from X10.

At worse, you will have lost an hour of your life waiting on X10 hold.
