Title: XX59A camera issues
Post by: philip.milazzo@gmail.com on March 24, 2013, 06:13:00 PM
My pair of XX59A cameras seemed OK initially.

Now after a week of operation indoors, the pair have a variety of problems. One has a flaky Ethernet (wired) connection, one refuses to traverse the entire horizontal range and one fails the SMTP test. I've tried different ports on my residential gateway, multiple camera hardware resets, swapping Ethernet cables and re-entering my SMTP credentials. The same SMTP credentials and cables produce good results from one device so they ought to be good in the other.

Sure, in practical use, the cameras will be on my wireless network, but not during my burn-in period.

I like the collection of advertised features. If they worked reliably, I'd be sold on the product but features that don't work reliably (and for a long time) aren't features at all. At this point I'm concerned about quality control and long-term durability and undecided between a refund or two new replacements. I intend phoning tomorrow for an RMA.

My plan was eventually to have at least two cameras indoors and four outdoors. Now I hesitate to expand the system.

I just ordered two of these cameras so I hope I don't have any problems like you described. They should be here early next week. Once they do I'll post how my set up goes.

Beware they have major firmware issues in opinion, and the are network hogs forget using them wirelessly. x10 says their fine I say the full of it. charging me restocking and shipping because their product wont work as advertised.

I purchased one of these cams (xx59A) and found that you can only enter about 48 or 49 characters for the wireless encryption key.  My router is capable of 64 digits and I have been using a 60 digit key for years on everything else.  Here is the exact message I got back from x10 support:

> >> > I do apologize as there no firmware update to handle the 60 digit

> Then I suggest that you clearly state this limitation in the website

Greetings,

I will pass that feed back to a supervisor.

I wouldn't hold my breath for this to happen. But I'm curious: why is 48 character encryption key a "problem"?

Got my two xx59A cameras in the other day. One works beautifully the other is defective and needs to be sent back. Was on the phone with X10 tech for over an hour until they determined the camera is dead. I'm just waiting for my return auth to send the camera back and then get my replacement.

My experience so far has been less than stellar:

My experience so far has been less than stellar:

  • ordered two xx59a cameras on March 14;
  • received them on March 15 or 16;
    • returned two defective cameras for replacement via RMA on March 26;
    • automated replacement order processed on March 29.

As of April 12, I'm still waiting. Customer Service has been apologizing and telling me "tomorrow" for several weeks. Today I dialed them at 9:02 AM Eastern Time and hung up without anyone taking my call at 9:56 AM. Meanwhile, I'd reached a chat rep who explained they were short-handed today but that they'd ship my cameras when they got restocked. I still get all the X10 "deal" messages inviting me to order xx59a cameras. I'll just wait for the two that I paid for last month.

I have patience and a sense of humor, but if this reaches the one-month point, I'm going to require a refund.
Hang in there... reps don't know %$#$# or they just won't tell you the freaking truth.

"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH"

Well i could handle the truth when one rep finally tells me when they get another shipment from CHINA where these cameras are coming from. I rather the truth than being string along with tomorrow, its on its way, we are getting some today etc etc an so on.

FYI Reps.. most people probably would be like.. ok, i check back in a couple of days if i haven't received anything.

I mean come on.. in the days of GPS, how hard is it to track of freaking ship on a big ass water from the shipper.

The xx59A is junk IMO. I would not recommend these camera's to any one.

I bought two and had to return one because it was DOA. The second one keeps sending motion detection alerts. It got so annoying I turned motion detection off. I'm getting ready to send this one back as well. I may replace it with another model or I may not.

Judging from the recent promotional messages, the xx59a is coming to the end of its run. I wonder if there will be closeout pricing soon (they might as well be free since there are none right now), or if the out-of-stock status is permanent. If Sales or Customer Service is reading, maybe they will chime in.

As of a few minutes ago, this is the story on my xx59a cameras: this model is out of stock; the warehouse receives a shipment every Wednesday; the incoming order (due tomorrow) is a "full" order with no further quantity information available; orders are being filled in the order in which they were received; my RMA replacement order, which was confirmed on March 29 will DEFINITELY be filled this week. We'll see.

That sounds about rightly happen with my order back in 2012.

Placed order.. Usually would get within 2-4 days after. After 10 days ( 2 weeks after orginial order ) contacted x10.
First told its on the way. so we wait a day... then we contact them again via phone this time and the rep informed me they are getting a shipment and it will ship out.

Got it the next day... worked right out the box  before mounting it with out problems...

Still nothing from X10 except assurances. April 29 will be one month from confirmation of my replacement order.

( Greg.. ) Hello, Thank you for contacting X10.com.

Have you seen the Airsight Collection? X10 has IP Cameras starting under $100! Click for more details!!

- May I have your email address or phone number so that I can contact you in case we get disconnected?

( Greg.. ) I am sorry for the delay. We ran into a shipping delay with FedEx but the cameras will be arriving to us on Wed and your camera should be shipping out this Wed or Thurs.
( Philip Milazzo ) That's the same story I've gotten since March 29, including last week. I know about the weekly Wednesday shipment. When did you last get one?
( Greg.. ) We did receive a small shipment
( Philip Milazzo ) Where is my order in the queue? I cannot accept "next week" indefinitely.
( Greg.. ) I will make sure your order is shipped this week.
( Philip Milazzo ) Please do. Thank you.

They tell me the same thing but they will get it to you, I do believe that. They are coming from china to them but they also sell them on eBay under their own brand name apexis so they are filling their own orders as well as making them for x10. All the HD IP cams I have tried are network hogs just FYI so expect to run Ethernet to them for them to work properly but the pix quality is worth it.

I'm not worried. I finally got a shipping notification and tracking number today. I should have the cameras in two days. And I can fish Ethernet cables to the planned locations. I even have a five-port switch that's looking for something to do.

Great, you can try wireless first but there seems to be a delay and that could just be my overloaded wireless part of my network. They must make them wireless for a reason.

My replacement order for two xx59a cameras arrived earlier this week. Both pass all the connectivity and electromechanical tests. I have one operating on my wireless network and the specified ports forwarding so I can get to it remotely. Nifty!

Did you get another xx59A or a different camera?

I chose two of the same xx59a I returned two of in March. This model does everything I'm interested in doing and was reasonably priced. Some folks called it junk but I can deal with network performance limitations and software quirks. When I get the cams placed somewhere useful I'll publish a URL so folks can see my quiet little corner of Norristown, PA.

Got mines over a month ago and had many issues trying connect it wirelessly or not always consistent, so i gave up on it. I now have have it connected directly to my router and no issues so far, i can connect to it at home and on my iphone  100% of the time. I recommend using a DNS service to connect to your camera on your smart device and of course use the port forward option on your router, this has been the best fail safe method for me. I use Livecams pro on my iphone..best app by far!..specially over the p2pcam64 piece of @#$#$% app. Just wanted to share my experience  >!

I'm in business with the xx59 camera. Take look.

http://c4557.airsight.net:81/

User and password are x10.

It's not the most exciting view but the camera is solidly on my wireless network, it's accessible from the web and image quality and response to commands are very good. Motion detection and mailing photos is working nicely. The important details are having a good IP address, correct port forwarding and wireless network range if you're using it. Here's a tip that might help: do the camera configuration on a wired network; let DCHP assign an IP address; then set it to static; now check the box under wireless network.

The web interface just works. Sometimes my iPhone or iPad doesn't send a movement command, but a quick screen resize cures that.

Oh the label underneath the camera base gives the MAC address of just one network adapter. Each camera has two adapters. I'd like to see a bigger label giving both MAC addresses.

Well, that's not what I had in mind for everyone.

If you get the login screen, I take it to mean you're getting to my camera. I had it going like crazy this morning. I could control it from Safari on my Verizon iPhone with the WiFi disabled. It detected me cutting the grass and mailed me lots of photos.

Last thing I did was to put my Verizon message address in the SMTP settings so motion detection notifications will pop up on my phone as well as going to my Gmail address. I'll go back to one address and see what happens.

What I see right now  is "normal" operation for a few seconds, then the video panel disappears leaving just the controls. I put the camera on the wired network and rebooted without an improvement.

This won't be a whole lot of fun if I have to reboot it every time there's a wrinkle. B:(

With wifi disable its using Verizon's Cell Phone Network using the airsight.net info.. but wouldn't work if you use the normal IP address 192.x.x.x:portnumber.

Yep....you get 6 pics each notification. after 1 minute. it resets and the next notfi gets you 6 more pics.. GETS PRETTY annoying after awhile especially if it detects a piece of blowing paper.. the tree.. a cat... who knows.. might detect the bird flying by.

Yup, I'm using the DDNS address when I'm on the Verizon 3G cellular network and my internal IP address and custom port when I'm on my home (WiFI or Ethernet) network. Both get me to the camera. It seems to be what happens after I log in that's the trouble. And I tried my admin and visitor login too.

I'm about ready to restore factory defaults. It shouldn't be necessary, but...
