Title: Blast from the past!
Post by: Bob A. on November 21, 2017, 08:58:25 AM
Hi folks,

You won't recognize me, although I've been a (very quiet) member for about 5 years. I've also been a constant, light x10 user for 30 years now. My request stretches back even further than that, so please forgive me!

I just obtained an apparently perfectly working Radio Shack (GE) Homeminder unit, for a pittance. I, of course, plan to do what I can to increase the cooling of the video IC, which, as I understand, is notorious for being the downfall of these. Now, my request:

Does anybody have a scan or copy of the owner's (instruction, or whatever it's called) manual for this device? I'd surely appreciate getting a copy of it. I've been all over the 'net, and can't find a blessed thing.

Thanks,
Bob

Can you find the Radio Shack part number on the unit? Maybe a 61-2673?
I searched for Homeminder and there where a few different kits under that name.
It sounds like you maybe asking about what looked like a video module.

Care to post a pic?

I'd be happy to; unfortunately, when I attempt to do so, I am not given any option to upload the photos.

FWIW I bought a couple of the Homeminders way back when. I may have the manual at home, but won't be back home until Monday, but will look for it then.

I think you need 10 posts before you are allowed to post a picture or IM someone.  Just post a couple more messages and you'll be there.

Thank you very much, Dave! I'd certainly appreciate that.

Thanks, Dave, but I've come across this, as well as a few others when I searched extensively on the 'net. Didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know. I really want to get the owner's manual, though.

I sure hope that you (or someone) come(s) across one in your archives!

No, sorry. I looked and looked and did not find any Home Minder stuff. I found stuff I didn't know I had but no manuals for HomeMinder.

Thank you, anyway, Dave, for your effort. I do appreciate it.

Back around '84 or '85 I bought a GE HomeMinder and excitedly set it up. It was a novel device but had some major shortcomings. One big problem is that it had no useful internal memory backup which meant setting up everything, including schedules, after any power loss - a major PITA. When the CP290 came out the HomeMinder went in the closet and, ultimately, the trash when we moved several years later.  From there I upgraded to the JDS TimeCommander in '94 and ultimately the JDS Stargate in'02 which I still use today in two homes along with XTB-IIR units.
All that being said, I used to have the manual and schematics for the HomeMonder and may still have them in a box.  I will look and let you know if I find them.

@brobin: It's nice to see another comp.home.automation alum here. Welcome!

As a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the GE Homeminder and my personal 40 year anniversary as an X-10 user please enjoy this video I found on YouTube!  Hard to believe it's been 40 years and even harder to believe the technology is still relevant today.

I noticed he cross-threaded it.  The HomeMinder hooked up to the TV like a video game. When I had one I used it for timed events as it was too cumbersome for direct control.  I had the ultrasonic remotes & 16 channel controllers for that.  Although the HomeMinder claims a battery backup, it wasn't very good and I remember having to reprogram the thing from scratch too many times. When the CP-290 came out I happily retired the HomeMinder.  After moving to a new home in '94 I bought a JDS Time Commander which was awesome and then graduated to the more capable JDS Stargate which I still use today!

Hi Bob!

I have a HomeMinder that I use every day, and has been in continual use since I bought my first house over a year ago. It controls all my lights on a schedule, and the roller shades in my bedroom. I replaced almost all the wall switches with X-10 switches, and can also control them with a few "control center" banks of RF switches throughout the house, and also have a few motion sensors hooked up, too. I absolutely love it!

I had the same concerns as you do about the overheating IC. If you haven't yet opened it up, let me tell you, the Home Minder is not fun to crack open! inside, all the relevant components are contained inside a shielded metal box that's soldered shut in either four or six places. One you get it open there's a fairly compact circuit board that's solidly attached to the shield. I think the video IC is on the underside of that board, inaccessible without more effort than I cared to put in. I had purchased a heat sink, thermal paste, etc, and was ready to do what I could, but when I finally got it open and saw what I was dealing with I realized I was in over my head and that I'd rather just chance the video IC overheating eventually. I put it in a fairly open location with good airflow, so hopefully it'll stay pretty cool! So far, so good - no issues whatsoever at all! At some point I'll purchase another HomeMinder unit just to have it on standby just in case this one goes bad.

I've got the manual floating around here somewhere but it wasn't of much use in this case. Unfortunately I lost my scanner to a flood so I can't send it to you, I'm afraid! Best of luck if you do try to add some cooling to the unit - let us know how it goes!

P.S. if you set the date to 1996 the days of the week should line up with the months, taking into account that this is a leap year!
