Title: Confusion on Dimmer Switches
Post by: RDSIGRIST on January 16, 2018, 02:23:28 PM
I have several dozen X10 switches in my home and want to expand to a new extension to the house.
The switches that I have been using operate like you would expect Decor switches to work.
Push upper section and the light comes on, push lower section and the light goes off, hold it and it goes brighter or dimmer.
Red light below the switch so you can see the switch in a dark room.

Recently, I purchased some X10 WS12 switches and that do not work that way.
Tap the upper part the light goes on, Tap the upper part again, and it goes off, hold it and it dims.
There is no light at the bottom of the switch, but it does have a small OFF slider to disable.

When I removed the cover of the X10 switch, I can see the module can be used for both a standard toggle switch and a decor switch.
The one that I have are a sealed unit that can only be used as a decor switch.

My question is:  Where can I find the standard decor working switch with the red light below the switch???

Do you have model number of the existing switch with the red light?

Are the present switches you have in the older installation. An X10 compatible from a different manufacturer?
Like Smarthome, ACT, Leviton? If so part number would be a big help.

I don't believe what you are looking for. Are available from X10 or X10Pro.
You mentioned the WS12A. So you are looking for a dimmer type not an On/Off relay type?

It sounds like you are describing the long discontinued Leviton "red line" switches that I installed in our own home 15 years ago.  All are still working perfectly.

I may have some used ones that I picked up on eBay for spares.  Contact me with a private message and I'll see what I have left.

You are correct, Jeff.

I took the plate off and found it was a Leviton.
It has a red light and also an on/off slider next to it.

I did not pull it out to see the part number.
I do know that it has both soft on/off and memory.

I do not know how to contact you privately (new to the board)

Just use the "My Messages" tab above, and then use the pull-down menu to send a message to JeffVolp.

(I wish that X10 would manufacture a wall switch with true rocker action like the Leviton products.)

Jeff
I second that motion.

I found the Leviton Red Line switches that I have been looking for - Model 6343
It supports 1000 watts and has the full rocker function, with memory and soft start.
Plus it has a red light when the switch if Off so that you can see it in the dark.

Great switch.

Now I am looking for the matching non-dimming model.
