Title: AHP Release 3.186 -- When & What's fixed?
Post by: tony on April 12, 2005, 11:26:29 AM
X10 Pro:
Is 3.186 release today or tomorrow?  If not
that only leaves Thursday cause you don’t
like Friday releases.
How about a quick synopsis of what has been
fixed.
I noticed that the release log is not
current.
Please advise

I will be "very happy" when X10 releases a
new and improved CM15A.  One that is robust
and can keep up with at least 2 motion
sensors signaling within a second or two of
each other.  Hope we get an upgrade path.
I'll be hunting cams and plug-in's when that
day happens.  In the meantime, I am always
happy to have an update that improves current
reliability.

SteveRF

Maybe they are to busy studying the errata
sheet I send in a couple of post, if they
are using GPIO interrupt on the clock, this
may else cause to clock to speed up, and is
random.

The Microcontroller used on the CM15a
CY7C63723 has a faulty GPIO interrupt(there
are false interrupt triggered), there is NO
SILICON FIX PLANNED by Cypress, probably
because they are migrating the encore parts
to the PSOC line.
Here is part of the errata sheet from
cypress:

• SCOPE OF IMPACT
The chip enters the GPIO Interrupt Service
Routine (ISR) in error.
• WORKAROUND
Workarounds will need to be tailored to
individual applications based on the
flexibility of changing the GPIO
usage, the timing of the GPIO interrupt
sources and firmware interrupt latencies.
• FIX STATUS
No silicon fix is planned.

We will have an update, but we're not ready yet.

X10 - Speaking of things that are supposed
to be fixed in the next update, will the
Activity monitor be fixed? Since the update
to 3.183, my activity log no longer reports
commands that the CM15A sends. I can't see
what time it says my lights came on, which
is one of the major functions of it.

Noam: That should be fixed in the update.

Observer,
Oh no...I am a CM15A user...
Since receiving the diag unit, it has
performed ok.. Time is right on. No gain no loss.
The unit does not seem fast enough to handle
2 motion sensors reporting within seconds of
each other .i.e (2 people going into separate
bathrooms at nearly the same time) I only
have 4 motion sensor in the house and 1
outside. There are only 2 of us (kids gone)
so I can only imagine how strained the unit
would be in a home with kids. The unit just
does not seem robust enough.
If I was a 1132 user, I doubt if I would be
here bashing X10 as some seem to do.  I sure
hope the bnext update will help our little
unit.  I bet (someday) we will see a "new and
improved" unit out.  Glad your also performs ok!
Regards,
SteveRF

Steve RF

I am an 1132CU user, but not by choice, I
purchased the CM15a with smart macros and
like every one else I wanted it to work. My
need are very simple: just control some
light, and few using motion detector(at the
most 4), I have no needs(at this time) for
cameras, I did not want to leave the
computer connected 24/7 the CM15a appeared
to have everything I needed and then some.
I tried to get this device to work, but
after many hours of testing I have
concluded that I could not afford to spend
any more time and move on. I am not bashing
X10, I feel cheated that the product should
not have been put on the market with so
many flaws. The microcontroller used has a
serious hardware flaw, as per errata sheet
dated march 2004, and the vendor (Cypress)
has no plans to fixit. I personally believe
X10 hardware peoples are aware of this
problem, I would not be surprised if the so
called diagnostic unit is an attempt to
find a work around to the chip defect. The
new processor(encore II series) could be
used as a replacement, but is different CPU
core( but more fun to work with), so they
would need to do firmware from scratch and
possibly new PCB.I am still an X10 user all
my switches and appliance control are X10
and are working fine.
The 1132CU work fine for now, but let’s
face it, I like the X10 approach better:
having RF transceiver built in is a plus in
more ways then one; if they redesign and
works good, I will purchase it again.

SteveRF:   I believe we all would like to
see the AHP/CM15A reliable and “major bug
free”, especially those that you refer to
as “X10 Bashers”.  Direct, objective, and
unabridged critique is the most efficient
way of defining problems and fixes and best
serves in bringing a product to a reliable
state as long as the vendor is cooperative.
Politically correct “kiss ass” statements
only detract from the required mission and
provides any objectors with a basis to push
a product out prematurely (the short sighted
profit mongrel).  However I believe they
also want a reliable product but are not
willing to “go to bat” for it.  Soo. . .
Objective Succinct feed back Yea!!  K.A.
Politically correct euphemisms BOO!!!

Just an status update: the next release isn't
ready yet, so I doubt we'll have a release
this week.

X10Pro--
Thanks for the status report.
You have stated before that you don't like
to do releases on Friday. I'll assume that
the reason is that you don't want people
bashing X10 over the weekend when you can't
respond...well...they are doing that anyway.

Consider our situation please. The weekend
is the best time for some of us to try out
your new version, find what's working or
what is a problem...and then report our
findings back to you. Some of us report
those results by e-mail and some report on
this forum.

Please, if you have a new release ready
today (Friday) let us have it. Then, Monday
morning you'll have our collective feedback
to work on for your work week.
Thanks,
--Nelson

Nelson:  It is common wisdom not to do
software releases on a Friday unless
absolutely necessary.  This way if the
release breaks something, the developers
can respond the next day to fix the
problem.  With a Friday release the
developers can’t respond until Monday.
Similarly, morning releases are better than
evening releases.  Obviously an exception
is made if the release is critical.

X10 has done Friday releases in the past
and once (at least) the release caused many
people’s systems to stop working
completely.  It is a good sign that they
have learned from their mistakes.

All very true...by the same token they have
learned from their mistakes and now offer a
link to a previous version to be used in
just such a situation.
My preference would be to get the release
sooner...but whatever will happen...will
happen.

I doubt we'll have a release ready for today,
but unlesss it were done very early I would
be hesistant to release it until Monday.
While we test during the whole process, any
changes at the end require more testing that
isn't always possible on a Friday afternoon.
Also, Most of our customers don't read these
forums, so they wouldn't all know about the
installers to roll back with. Even some of
the people here who read the update posts
don't get that. Mainly, though, it's a matter
of being able to respond and work with
customers, and we can't do that very well on
the weekend.

How about releasing it on the forum, but not
forcing the automatic update.
That way, the forum users (probably your
largest group of problem-finders) can test
it, give their feedback, and roll back if
they want to, but the "general public"
wouldn't automatically get the update until
at least Monday, when you guys get a chance
to read the feedback from the weekend.
Essentially, a beta testing of the upgrade.

FWIW

I would just like to know what is to be
fixed in the release.  It should be known
well enough to let someone know what to
expect so they can test it out when it
arrives.  I know the last time X10 posted
the "fixes" prior to a release I was ready
with new macros that would test the
problems I had and I knew quickly it
worked.  It wouldn't hurt to list them,
even if it is not "exactly" what is fixed.

Hangin' in there....

X10 Pro: The answer is easy,  scheduling
someone to handle the week-end calls and
only release through the forum and not
through Auto-update on Fridays.

I am confused with the version number of
the latest release. I was running 3.183 and
downloaded the latest release which I
thought should have been 3.186 but what is
shown in the application is 3.180. When I
check for the latest release in the
application, it states that 3.180 is the
latest but the banner indicating an "update
is available" is constantly showing. Is
this yet another bug??

As I can tell, the latest release is 3.183
and the one coming is 3.186 (believe 3.185
was for iWitness).

The next release will be 3.186. The last
general AHP release was 3.183, but we used
3.184 and 3.185 for iWitness releasese.

JGC: It sounds like some of the update data
has gotten confused on your system. Try
running this update:

X10 Pro and the target release date is?

Will there be a list of fixes in the
announcement?
