Title: Bluetooth warning
Post by: jz on February 05, 2006, 10:25:07 AM
Assuming Bluetooth technology continues to
improve and is more universally accepted as
a consumer wireless standard, X10 video
users will find their security systems
unusable because of the frequency
interference created by Bluetooth units.
Bluetooth operates essentially over the
entire freq range of X10, basically
scrambling any Channel Setting on the X10
camera. Take your pick, Bluetooth or X10,
but not both at the same time. Check you
electronic/computer stores……you will see
more and more Bluetooth keyboards, mouse,
headsets, printers, digital cameras,
scanners, cell phones etc etc …its
coming.    On the other hand, I will credit
X10 with affordable security and home
automation products that date back to the
70s or 80s. I would challenge X10 to embrace
this technology with new products
incorporating Bluetooth.  Bluetooth offers
secured  video transmissions, the ability to
have more then one camera on at a time on a
set channel, the ability to coexist on a
PAN….the possibilities are endless .
Bluetooth USB Dongles (transceivers) are
very affordable even now….less the $10.
Naturally there are some issues that would
have to be addressed, such as range and the
number of units you can have on one system
but the bottom line is my investments in X10
video are going to be wiped in the near
future.  If anyone has the knowledge of how
to convert my existing video system to
Bluetooth, please let me know. And if I have
made any errors or misstatements in the
above, I would really like to know.

The Main reason noone uses bluetooth for
this sort of automation is the range.
Bluetooth is great, yes, BUT it is SHORT
range only (few feet only). to get
something that will transmit from outside
into your home requires a longer range.

bluetooth for keyboards ect are all close
range to PC... ok to use.
cell phone add ons....  all close and
personal to you. this is not cell
transmitions, just from say your phone to
your headset ect.

another thing...   2.4ghz is on the way out
as 5.8ghz comes in, making most new
products 5.8ghz leaves home automation to
900mhz & 2.4ghz free from interference.

a general rule for wireless eq. dont buy
more then 4 of each frequency unless they
are all secure transmitions. X10 isnt
secure.

although thier security systems may be
coded.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Class 1
Bluetooth are rated for up to 100 meters and
I have not seen any evidence of Bluetooth
moving to a diffent frequency range....and
the hackers have them cranked up to a mile.
