Title: Melting Socket Rockets with R14 bulbs

All,

As noted a few posts down, I've had issues
using Socket Rockets with R14 bulbs in track
lighting cans designed for R20 bulbs.  Tech
Support said it was becasue the filaments in
the R14 "look" like a hologen bulbs to the
socket rocket, but my findings are a bit
different.

When I put the same bulb and Socket Rocket
in an open area, the base of the unit did
not melt after 10 hours.  In fact, tapping
the base of the Socket Rocket made a sharp
sound, leading me to the conclusion that it
was not close to melting at all.  To this
end, I suspect that the melting is due to
the trapped heat in the R20 light can and
not the bulb, as told by tech support.

The next step is to modify a R20 can such
that the heat is allowed to exhaust better.
That may never happen, but at least we now
know it's highly doubtfull that standard
R14, R16, or R20 bulbs are the cause of
melting Socket Rockets in track light cans.

Thanks for the update. Does sound like a
heat buildup from poor air flow.
