X10 switch for 1600 watts - 4 lights
« on: March 05, 2008, 05:04:09 PM »

Hi.  I'm new to the whole X10 thing and a quick search revealed to me that most switches are rated at 500w or less.  I need a switch which will turn on and off 4 Metal Halide lights which are 400 watts each so I guess I need one that's rated at 1600W.  I saw a heavy duty appliance control on ebay that goes up to 4800w but it was for 220 power and this is 110.

I actually don't need a wall switch.  This is going inside an electrical box up on the ceiling of a gym.  There are 12 lights in all but I just need a way to turn off the last 4 on the circuit when the rest are on so I'll be tying in at the junction box.

I also don't need a dimmer.  These are either on or off.

Any suggestions?

X10 does not make anything that goes as high as 1600 watts in a single switch or module.

The Leviton #6375 in-line "Fixture Relay Module" is rated for 15A incandescentent, inductive, or resistive.  That should do the job, and it will fit inside a larger electrical box.  We use one for the transformer that powers our landscape lights, and it hasn't missed a cycle since it was installed.

I found this on ebay which is also 15A...

Should that work?  15A @ 110 should be good up to 1650 Watts.  Is that right?

Also, it says this one is for inductive loads.  Will that be good for these lights?

Yes, that should be exactly the same unit.  I was familiar with the Leviton part number because I use that one here.  And yes, 15A should do the job.
