« on: March 01, 2009, 01:53:58 AM »

Hello Everyone;

Here is a list of my standard code selections, add yours as applicable.
Code A = Auxillary devices such as motion sensors
Code B = Bedrooms and Bathrooms
Code C = Closets
Code D = Dining Room/Den
Code E = Open
Code F = Family Room
Code G = Garage
Code H = Open
Code I  = Open
Code J  = Open
Code K  = Kitchen
Code L  = Landscape equipment like lights and sprinklers
Code M = Macro Designations
Code N = Open
Code O = Office
Code P = Pool/Patio

That's about all that I have used.

That's all there is.  Lamp and appliance modules only have A-P on the housecode wheel.

Makes sense to me... One question:

What would your Moitored House Code be?

...What would your Moitored House Code be?
Good question!
While everyone has their own preferences for what codes they use and don't use, his setup doesn't really allow one to make a very constructive use of the Monitored House Code feature.

It's a topic not discussed often enough.

I see the OP used Code "C" for Closets... and I've read that many use "C" for Cameras... (although I don't myself). I had thought that "B" would be fitting for Basement. The idea that motion sensors are "Auxiliary devices"... is a new concept for me. And I shy away from using code "A"... although I do actually use it... I mostly keep it available for testing of NEW devices. The A1 Code is the default X10 code.

My setup is a product of evolution... NOT intelligent design. I originally started using the "B" Code because I had read a post that recommended against using the "default "A" Code". Then not knowing if there could be frequency drift... I [skipped "C" and] next used Code "D".

Although I do have a Home Office... it doesn't use the "O" Code. I use the "O" for my Talking O'Clock Macro.

I was slow to adapt AHP... so by the time I started writting macros... I was just grabbing letters from thin air.

Yes, to reiterate what has been posted here at the forums before:

  • House code A is a bad idea as it is what most of the devices without code wheels default to.
  • House code M is a bad idea as it is what most of the devices with code wheels send if the house code wheel stops making contact.
  • House code P is "iffy" as some X10 controllers send P when powered up, and most X10 signal test transmitters transmit on the P house code as well.

Otherwise, it is mostly a matter of taste.

I personally use B for keychain and stick-a-switch controllers (just because A is bad and B is easy to program ;) ), H for Palm Pads (hand-held), L for Lights (also my monitored code), O for outside.

In the real world, the only constant is change.

When I'm online you can find me in the Home Automation Chat Room!

While others may of had problems with HC "M", I never have so I use it for most of my macros. HC "H" is my hidden code. i.e. For items that I don't want accidentally turned on or off from any controller just macros. I use HC "L" for my linked macros. e.g. I can setup a key chain remote to control items on different HCs via linked macros. I've tried to keep most of HC "P" free for testing. e.g. I test new items on P1 and leave then set at P1 when they test ok. That way if I need to grab something in a hurry from the goody box, I know it's already been tested. At this point I have so many items and macros that I'm using parts of almost all the HCs. Again it mostly boils down to a matter of taste and planning. e.g. If you would like all your lights to turn off with the push off the "All Units Off" button on your bedside controller and you don't want to write a macro to handle it, then you need all your lights on the same HC.   -:) D'oh©

Hi All;

Orca here, I just added one HC that I left off.

Thanks for the added suggestions.

Change H = Open to H = Hallways/Stairways where most of my 3, 4 & 5 ways are located.
