2-way ws467 in place of 3-way switch or ws4777
« on: May 27, 2009, 05:22:29 PM »

 ???  Is there any way to use 1 or 2 ws467's in a room with 2,  3-way switches. ?
I only need 1 switch to work as the 2nd switch is blocked by a refrigerator and plan on using a  slimline ss13a on that end.
Can this work with proper wiring ?  → diagram would help ??
thxs

(sorry-→ I think this where the post should be)

Yes, you can do what you want.  Do you have a multi meter? (and can you use it  ;) )

DIY three way to two way switch conversion:
Put tape, or a switch guard over the switch behind the refridgerator. You will need to leave it in one permanent position if you are not going to remove it. Turn the light ON at the switch position you want to replace with the WS467. BE CAREFUL TO NOT FLIP THIS SWITCH AGAIN until after we check for continuity between the terminals. Turn off the breaker for the circuit and remove the switch.

This next step is important: note which wire is connected to each of the three screw terminals of the switch before removing the wires. Now use the ohm meter function of the multimeter and ohm between the the terminals of the switch, finding the two terminals which are shorted or have zero ohms between them. Connect the WS467 to the two wires which were connected to those two terminals.

Also important; put a insulating wire nut on the third, now unused wire and re-install the switch. Turn on the breaker - should work (he says confidently).

Thanks→  Dave it worked out just fine .!!  :)%  3way►2way !!  Although the other wires didn't need to be capped off. They were travellers to bring power to another room. I had the switch wired incorrectly at first and was dimming lights in the bathroom...not the room I was in..> whoops.!  -:)

I suggested capping the traveler assuming you leave the second 3-way behind the refridgerator.  Someone accidentily flipping it would make the traveler hot. Glad the instructions worked.
