Big Red Emergency Button
« on: October 11, 2009, 10:49:52 AM »

Does anyone have one of these, and if so, how well does it work? I'm thinking of using it as a doorbell but I'm not sure...it's kinda big...and RED

I have one.. and it does work. It didn't appear weather resistant enough to me for my application. So I bought the GE wireless doorbell(s). They have a great RF range and can be bought in ether battery or plug-in and you can mix and match. Although there are a couple different non-matching versions (a 16 codes and 32 codes.. I think).

I bought a standard unit that hides away upstairs.. and a strobe unit [no joke] that I use in the theater. The units allow for up to seven different and separate "rings". This is a great feature because I have buttons at three doors, and each door has its own sound.

The great thing about the battery powered unit (batteries last about a year here) is we can take it to the deck in summer and still hear the front door even if we're doing yardwork.

I also was able to hack the receiver/ringer unit. I connected the "bell" to a PowerFlash Module.. and run a doorbell camera macro. If the TV is on.. and the doorbell rings I get an 8 second view of who is there. The computer also emails me an image of who was there. The idea was originally to see if a package was delivered while I was at work.

I love X10... but this is one application where I think the store-bought-stuff has advanages.

Hey Dave_x10_L,
Nice home theatre! I'm especially impressed that you and your wife remodeled it in ONE WEEKEND? WWOW!
(it takes me all weekend just to clean the cat boxes!  ;D )

I'm thinking of buying that red doorbell because my new neighbour has a wireless doorbell that's the same as mine, and whenever their doorbell rings, so does mine....which can be quite annoying at 3a.m.!! But I don't think anyone in my neighborhood has an x10 wireless doorbell. At least I haven't seen any BIG RED buttons around.

What do you mean that it's not weather-proof enough? My porch is relatively well sheltered from the rain, but it does get cold in the winter.

Thanks. I had gathered materials for a couple of weeks before that. The research and planning was really the hard part as I didn't know much about this stuff then. It was just a tad nerve racking as it was a sizable investment for me... and I couldn't be positive at the time that it was going to work.

My front door has no shelter at all.

Are we talking about the KR15A? Panic Button Remote Control.

X10 has so many different creative names for things. I am not sure if my KR15A is what you are talking about.  rofl

Will give it a look and see what I can find out. I got a few when an X10 vendor dumped all their X10 stuff.

The KR15A is kind of an oddity.
Doesn't look very weather resistant to me either.

If on the same address as the SH10A small siren
First it dings. Then will start siren sound depending on how long button pushed.

Can also be linked to a security console or so the instructions indicate. I have never tried it with a security console.

One push of button not holding it:

.. I like the emailing an image of who was there. I should do that.

I like that too. The whole doorbell camera idea was Knightrider's. The doorbell to PowerFlash is simple... would be even easier with a wired doorbell. I used AHP [software suite] to construct the macro and record and email the image(s). I would like to send the images to my phones email [also] soon. Of course... this isn't the only camera I have emailing.

Actual email image (ID of bell ringer concealed) attached
