X10 module to control portable heater
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:24:26 PM »

Hi Folks,

Just found out about X10 and am amazed at what it can achieve!

I have a question... I would like to switch on my portable heater from work, and the portable heater is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16896615064

It is rated at 1.5KW and most appliance modules that I see are (http://www.x10.com/automation/am466_s.html) 500W.

Is there some module that would fit my needs? Any help would be great!!

I'm running a 1500KW electric heater with a standard appliance module every winter for 3-4 hours with no problems with either the heater or the module, no burning or cracking.

Dan,

Thank you for the response!! Could you please tell me what other components I need to be able to

1. Control the heater from a PC on the LAN
2. Control the heater from the internet/smartphone

I am new to this! so thanks for all the inputs :)

I use AHP 3.310 with a CM15A. As to the LAN or the internet/smartphone I don't know.

The 500 watt rating is for Incadescent Lamps.
Since the heater is resistive with maybe a small inductive fan in it. The 15 amp resistive load would apply. Which is 1800 watts.

Correct!!!   I control mine with a standard appliance module with no problems from either the heater or the module, every winter.

As for control of your system on and thru the net, I recommend LogMeIn (www.logmein.com). They have a free version and I use it to run my vacation home at 7000 feet in the Sierra some 100 miles distant. Very satisfactory. See my thread on same here:
http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=25645.0. I control heaters throughout the home remotely.Logmein also has a smartphone/tablet app called LogmeIn ignition that would allow you to use a smartphone to do whatI am doing via the net.

Interesting, but, I'm not interested in controlling my X10 through the net, so I don't want or need LogMeIn.

Perhaps, but r3b37 is, which is why they asked about it:

For the issue with control from the internet look in to Ihouse it is free and it has a web server in it to control devices over the internet.
