Internet VERY Slow with an airsight camera connected to network
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:04:47 AM »

We have 8 Airsight Cameras (The $99 ones)  in our network, all wireless. The video is perfect when viewed on an iPhone, iPad, Android, etc. (We use the IP Cam Viewer Pro app)

We recently troubleshot our slow internet - and we determined that our speed is perfect when no cameras are connected (I simply changed the wifi key to test, and using speakeasy.net/speedtest we get around 4Mbps Download, 500 Kbps Upload)(Standard business DSL)

I then connected a single camera with a network cable to the main switch.
The speedtest was now .25 Down, .1 Up.

I then unplugged cameras, connecting different cameras each time (thinking I may have 1 bad camera)... speed is slow with any combination of cameras connected.

Is this a common problem? Is there a setting I can change to limit the bandwidth used by these cameras?

I Guess you are meetting the bandwidth issue, you can set it as 320 X 240 resolution for trying, better to set one router to connect max 3-4 cameras. as it is MJPEG compression.

Joe,

I need to ask you a few questions, before I can answer:

Are you viewing all 8 cameras over the internet at a remote location? If so, this will certainly use a lot internet of bandwidth.

Are the camera's set up for remote viewing over the internet (did you enable port forwarding on your router).

If you are only viewing the cameras locally, is the internet slow all the time or only when you are viewing the cameras?

Yes, all 8 ports are being forwarded to the cameras for remote viewing (iPhone/iPad apps)

The problem is the same whether all 8 cameras are connected, or only 1.

I tested last night by directly plugging in 1 computer, 1 camera, and NOTHING else into the DSL modem.

The speed drops as soon as I plug in the camera cable (Cat5) (Exactly as described in initial post)

Let me know if you need more info, thanks!

I am still having the issue, we have been disconnecting the Cameras during the day so that the internet works properly and reconnecting them at night.

I am going to replace the Netopia DSL Modem today to see if that helps.

We found out when calling AT&T that we could get faster service for cheaper by switching to U-Verse, so we figured we can't pass it up, and we wanted to see if it would fix the issue.

The tech came out yesterday and installed it, and we are not having any issues with the cameras slowing down the internet anymore.

So, our old DSL service must have been the issue all along.

Thanks for the help!
