LED Bulbs that work well with X10
« on: May 23, 2014, 07:23:22 AM »

With the faze out of the standard incandescent light bulb there has been lots of development with light bulbs.
It appears the LED may be the winner in the bulb war.
Many users here have had good experience with different brands some have even experimented looking for the best brand for their setups.
Hopefully they will post their successful bulb findings here as well for future reference.

Here is a list of LED bulbs X10 has tested with their modules with success:

Also, Philips has recently released an API and Software Development Kit for their Hue LEDs.

For those wanting to switch to LED, this is good information.  I found that the stores local to me (Seattle) have continued to carry essentially the same stock in bulbs to date.  I asked and they indicated they were just continuing to sell what was already produced.  I did a bit of research and found that there's been a couple changes in the US as far as enforcement of this "ban".

1) When the US gov't had the sequester, the agency that was tasked with enforcing this ban was essentially defunded.  As a result, there was noone to make anyone comply.  After this sequester ended, I don't know if they have stepped back up, by no stores have changed stock in any way local to me.

2) When it came down to the deadline, the gov't modified the "ban" to be slightly less restrictive.  As a result, incandescent bulbs with halogen bulbs inside (hybrid incandescent I guess) are efficient enough to pass.  These bulbs are not as cheap as the original banned bulb, but they are certainly cheaper than LED.

I don't know how this affects other countries (probably doesn't).  So, those that want LED's can use this thread as a guide for what to get.  Those that don't, know that there are some form of incandescent available.  And, everyone should know that twisty bulbs are still evil (bad for X10, bad for environment, bad light...simply bad).

I have tested the 72 watt halogen replacement for the old 100 watt incandescent bulbs. They act the same as the older ones on X10 and other brand dimmers. Depending on which old 100 watt bulb model. They are about the same lumen output as some and slightly less with other brands.

One point if you use the halogen replacement. Read the added cautions label on the box to keep you out of problems, with where you are using them.

You mean legal trouble or things like heat?

Things like heat, exposure to water, don't use if the outer glass is broken even if the halogen capsule still lights.

I have been using Cree LEDs since last November with x10 lamp modules, LM15A and wall switches. All work fine including the flood lamp type, outdoor string LEDs. CM15A has no problem controlling with macros.
Most of the X10 modules are old (no ramp up).
Exception being the candle bra type LED bulbs. I have four lamps controlled by one X10 wall switch. To make it work, I had to use one incandescent bulb.

That is my experience.

I have been using the CREE BR40 (65 watt equivalent) from the Depot on both old and new wall switches.  They work great, although linearity of the dimming is a little different from the incandescents.

Been using Cree bulbs here without any issues with my extensive X-10 setup, as well as some recently added TCP's (also made in the USA) and some low voltage LEDs outside.

18 of these Cree's installed (now very affordable in 4 packs):
Cree 60W Equivalent Soft White (2700K) A19 Dimmable LED Light Bulb (4-Pack)
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-60W-Equivalent-Soft-White-2700K-A19-Dimmable-LED-Light-Bulb-4-Pack-BA19-08027OMF-12DE26-2U500/205176808

4 of these Cree's installed:
Cree 65W Equivalent Soft White (2700K) BR30 Dimmable LED Flood Light Bulb
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-65W-Equivalent-Soft-White-2700K-BR30-Dimmable-LED-Flood-Light-Bulb-BBR30-06527FLF-12DE26-1U100/204366182#specifications

7 of these TCP's installed (2 three packs and a single) in two bathroom vanities (4 in one, 3 in the other):
TCP RLG255W27KND3 LED G25 - 40 Watt Equivalent (only 5W used!) Soft White (2700K) Energy Star Globe Light Bulb 3 - Pack
http://smile.amazon.com/TCP-RLG255W27KND3-LED-G25-Equivalent/dp/B00KYTNHKM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

I also replaced all of my low voltage halogen landscaping lights with LEDs.  I have three Malibu low voltage transformers on my X-10 system running:

2 of these (they replaced 2 20 watt halogens):
Paradise GL33760BK Low Voltage Cast Aluminum 3-Watt LED Floodlight, Black
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00378K8MM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And 1 of these (replaced a 50 watt and a 20 watt halogen):
Malibu Low Voltage LED 75-Watt Equivalent Outdoor Black Floodlight
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Malibu-Low-Voltage-LED-75-Watt-Equivalent-Outdoor-Black-Floodlight-8401-4675-01/204489888

Except for some of the Cree's, all of these bulbs are X-10 controlled.

I use the Ikea and Walmart and they work. Occasionally I get flickering. Have to turn off and on to reset. But very unusual.

I just purchased some new X-10 products: 3 Appliance modules,  1 Dimmer Module and 2 HRA20A Hand Held Remotes. I really like the Hand Held Remotes.

So far, these are the only light bulbs I have found that WILL DIM:

Walmart Great Value 60 watt Dimmable (4 pack)

These light bulbs WOULD NOT dim:

Cree 100 watt Dimmable (2 pack)

Philips 60 Watt Glass Dimmable (4 pack)

Some folks have complained of flickering, I noticed that once when I first started using my Hand Held Remote Modules.

My Solution: when you dim a light, touch the dim button in increments, wait for the light to dim, then press again to dim some more.

Don't hold the dim button down continuously, when I did, the light reacted erratically and it would flicker afterwards.

In fact I destroyed a Great Value Bulb doing this; it eventually quit working.

I think the bulbs get over-loaded/confused if you hold the dim button down while dimming the light.

I dim and brighten the lights in increments/steps now and no longer have any flickering or burned out bulbs.

So what is the consequence of dimming a non-dimmable LED just a touch win an LM-465?  I don't care to lower the brightness of the LED's themselves, but I have rope light outside my front door area and I want to dim those down to about 9-10 out of the 12 setting (WM-100), but on the same run there are two colored (red/green) non-dimmable Phillips LED's.  There is not much of a selection of dimmable color LED bulbs.    When I dim the LM-465, the LED bulbs seem fine, they actually stay the same brightness down to 60%.

Using a LED not rated to be dimmed. On a dimmer like a LM465. Can lead to damage or short life of the LED bulbs. Damage to the LM465. Strange flaky unexpected operation.  Maybe nothing.

Since they are in a combination with LED bulbs rated to be dimmed. Maybe be fine. Only time will show if anything is going to happen.

FEIT LED60, 60 watt replacement / 8.8watt consumption, 800 lumen, 2700K LED light bulbs work fine several plug-in appliance modules I tried, including local control. They replaced an older CFL bulb which didn't work with X10 modules at all (too noisy). These LEDs are currently sold at Costco as article 1300520 in packs of 6.

Edit: note that I'm not using any dimmable X10 modules. Just appliance modules.
The box for these LEDs lists them as being dimmable, but I don't have any dimmer of any kind to try them with.
