Rest In Peace, HAL
« on: November 12, 2018, 10:37:31 AM »

Douglas Rain, the Canadian-born actor best known as the voice of HAL 9000 in "2001: A Space Odyssey" and its sequel "2010: The Year We Made Contact," died Sunday at St. Marys Memorial Hospital in St. Mary's, Ontario, according to CTV News. He was 90.

The HAL 9000 is where it all began for me. A friend of mind and I went to see 2001 A Space Odyssey, in the summer of 1968. For me... and millions of others the movie created a paradigm shift in possible visions of the future. Admittedly this was almost 2 years after Majel Roddenberry voiced the Federation computer voice on Star Trek. But the Space Odyssey used technology more as a character... than a prop. IMHO.

Douglas Rain gave a great performance.

Speaking of "what got us started in HA," I got hooked in 1959 (I was eight) when my grandmother took me with her one afternoon to see "Pillow Talk" with Rock Hudson & Doris Day.  The bachelor pad scene did it for me. It's worth watching:

When I was 15 I had a little room in the basement that I wired up to control different color lights, a door lock, a strobe light, a color organ and a radio from a little switch panel that I made out of WWII aircraft surplus parts from the Surplus Center mail order catalog. (I still have some of the switches in a cigar box!) Knowing what I know about wiring now compared to what I did then, I am, to this day, amazed that I didn't burn the house down.  :o

I think for many of us here.... movies and/or TV opened our minds to the possibilities and shaped our expectations. Life.... imitating art
