The USB standard covers communication specifics.  There is a controller that takes care of timing of this based on the standard.  So long as the wire doesn't cause an issue, the USB host and device will communicate based on the controller.  The CM15A is 1000 years old and does not use USB 3 (probably not even USB 2 actually).  If you have a USB cable that is less than 16' I wouldn't worry about any of this.

When I was running Alex10 from a laptop, the USB cable to the CM15A was actually an 8' cable plugged into a 15' extension for a total run of 23ft and I had no problems.  I now use that same cable from a Smartenit P2 to a Smarthome 2413U PLM.
