Hey guys I am about to pull my hair out.  I
have my entire house x10'd with all
interior lights and an external wired
camera, and 2 flood lights.  Everything was
working fine for about a week, and then out
of the blue the CM15A stopped working
right. I could only turn on about 4 lights
in the house with the software or the
remote (the same four) a couple on A and
couple on B codes.  I called X10 and did
some trouble shooting including plugging in
an old transceiver and sure enough I can
control all lights on the selected house
channel via remote.  Any who the techs said
the CM15A must have went bad so they RMA’d
me a new one.  I just plugged it in and
sure enough it is doing the same thing.  I
erased all macros and now only have all the
lights in the system.  No luck.  The techs
now say maybe I have line noise; problem is
I have added nothing new to my home since
before it was working like a champ.  What
could this be?  Is it possible they sent me
a defective RMA CM15A?  Any help would be
much appreciated.  Man this is getting
expensive in man hours.

Freewilly: When testing, are you plugging the
old transceiver into the same outlet that you
use the CM15A in? That's an important test,
since it's possible that something where the
CM15A is plugged in is producing noise, or
blocking X10 signals. If you use a UPS on
your computer, that's a good place to look.
Some computer power supplies also seem to
produce a lot of noise.

x10 Pro, I must be stupid, I was not
pluggin into the same outlet, and as you
suspected I am getting the same problem
witht the old transceiver now.

All lights appear to be working normally
again.  Strangly enough I have to renegade
lights in my house that will turn on via
software or remote but won't turn off, I
have plugged in the old transceiver in
another room to control it from the remote,
but no dice with the software.  Incidently
I have the CM15A plugged into a surge
protector at the moment that my computer is
also plugged into. It seems to work in this
location minus the two renegade lights.
Any recommendations, and by the way thanks
very much for the quick reply.

Freewilly:  Do you have a phase coupler?
If not this may be the number one thing you
can do to improve reliability.  FYI: I
wrote a tutorial on phase couplers.  You

Also, I highly recommend that you not plug
your CM15a (or any X10 device) into or near
a surge suppressor.  Many surge suppressors
have noise filters which will absorb the
X10 powerline signal.  Optimally you want
everything that will generate or absorb
powerline noise plugged into an X10
compatible noise filter which will block
both the noise and X10 signals (obviously
you don’t want to plug any of your X10
devices into one of these filters).  I also

Roger thanks for the advise.  I purchased a
phase coupler and a noise filter from smart
home and the system is now working like a
champ.  All is good in the land of oz minus
a bug with my companion RWS19, not turning
the light on.  I think I have a bad unit
but am continue to investigate.

I am using CM15A for the last few months. I
have a strange problem. Whenever I put
battries in it and transfer timers and
macros, it works fine for a day or so after
that I can not switch on/off any light in my
house. When I unplug it, I can feel that it
is bit hot. If I use it without battries,
then it works fine. Does anyone know, what
is happening? I will appreciate your help.

Freewilly:  I am glad things are working
for you now.

Rookie: It sounds to me like there is
something wrong with the power supply
circuit in your CM15A causing it to
overheat and flood the powerline with
noise.  Hardware problems that manifest
themselves after several days of use are
difficult to catch in the factory.  I would
get X10 to replace your CM15A.

The software is not avilable on a disk CD or
for free [Registration number needed]
download. You need the registration code
from the original owner and then it can be
downloaded from the web; maybe. The original
owner was sent an email with the details.
There is some third party software that can
also be used with the cm15a but is a
purcheased thing.
