A typical X-10 live char...
« on: July 18, 2005, 08:36:37 PM »

Jeff W ) I got my RMA number. I want to
uninstall AHP I'm running XP HOme SP2. I go
to add/remove programs and try to remove it
and it says "the win16 Subsystem was unable
to enter protected mode, DOSX.exe must be in
your autoexec.nt and present in your PATH.
Now, I've seen this error with other 16-bit
apps (like the old AH 1.42), but AH runs
fine. Why can't I remove AH PRO???
( Trevor ) Give me a minute to find your answer
( Trevor ) I do not know. The AHP software is
a 32 bit applications. That fact that you are
getting that error is confusing.
( Jeff W ) could it be because i have both AH
and AHP on the same system?
( Jeff W ) please walk me through a manual
uninstall
( Trevor ) I do not believe so. There is no
manual unistall for the software. You
basically have to delete the program groups
and any registery keys listed in windows
registery regarding the AHP software.
( Jeff W ) what names would the registry keys
be under?
( Jeff W ) can you send me the list of keys?
( Jeff W ) how about this - what program gets
run to uninstall?
( Jeff W ) what I want to make sure I get rid
of is the activity monitor service
( Jeff W ) hello?
( Jeff W ) H E L L O Trevor are you there?

(After 10 more minutes of inactivity I gave up)

way to go X-10 (sigh)

Even when it works, it only delete the
program folder, the drivers are not removed
and keep on running wasting Computer
resources, registry key are not deleted
either.
I use a program called “1click Fixer Plus”
to fix orphaned registry key an other
problems left beyond by badly written
software, else I had to use MMC ( Microsoft
Management Console) to remove X10nets and
other garbage left from AHP.

Do you really expect X-10 to support your
computer, your O/S, and know what other
garbage you have installed on your PC?

Give me a break.  If your O/S will not
uninstall properly call them.  If you need
PC help call a PC expert.  X-10 can give
minimal advice on setting up their software
to run, but in most cases anything that
does not run is because of conflicts with
other devices and other software you have
on your system, especially with
these "basement built" and "home made" PCs
with pirated software.

Steve

The uninstall it’s not an OS issue, it’s a
responsibility of the software vendor to do
their clean up after uninstalling their
software. X10 leave x10nets  installed and
running after AHP is uninstalled, this is
deliberate by X10, they have a lame excuses
on why.
As a standard practice the software vendor
must remove all changes made to the
computer registry, all files installed, the
only files left behind should be user
create files only.
It’s evident by your commend that you
welcome any form of spyware in your
machine, to each it’s own.

Steve is correct.  No s/w designer can plan
for what conflicts/resources/versions/OS
clones/etc are out there.

If you know anything about s/w you know
there are NO standards out there which is
why it is important to use utilities that
capture and restore the registry.

The bottom line is - it is your computer,
your O/S selection, your responsibility to
maintain all patches, and your
responsibility to know what s/w you are
installing, all conflicts, responding to
all the prompts properly, and to be
prepared with proper backups when loading
ANY new s/w.

The bottom line is X10 AHP
install/Uninstall is poorly written, it’s
flawed and customer should not be subjected
to this kind of aggravation from a so
called “Reputable Company”.
If you new anything about writing software,
you would understand how bad AHP is.
Any real programmer would have not problem
supporting USB devices on win 98SE all the
way up to win XP, they are rules on
supporting multiple OS, on Install an
Uninstall programm.
I am getting tired of morons with no
computer experience making stupid comments,
and do not have the guts to use their real
name.

Clearly you are the moron.  I have been an
I.T. Consultant since 1980.  How about you?

Why do you think companies like M/S and
Adobe don't even have uninstalls that
remove everything?  You think they are
incompetent too?

Believe me I am the first one to complain
about sloppy code but you obviously have
never worked with PC O/Ss.  Nor do you
understand the variations of O/S's
available and the nature of all Windows
software, and the configuarations and
conflicts involved.

I have uninstalled many X-10 software
packages without issue.  However, I know
what I am doing and I also know what I have
installed and how they interrelate.  The
common user does not, nor will they ever.
The permutations of possibilities you are
expecting them to anticipate is beyond
reason.

Unless you have designed, written, sold and
supported business software you would not
understand this.

I had an IT employee that talked just like
you…
I design embedded control for mission
critical application, and some PC
programming,
Programmers that produce code like AHP have
a very short employment here, and IT people
with your attitude just as short employment.
If names like CMP OS, 8080 based computer,
means anything to you, than you know how
long I have worked with computers;
incidentally do you know that the first
PCDOS released was a modified version of
Digital resource CPM OS?

HEY !
Everybody Smile now...
I still have a functional Zilog Z80, in a
running microcomputer, capable of running
CPM... Can't do much with it but I think it
is neat just because it still runs...
Looks like time to sit back and take a deep
breath.... and smile... life is very short...
Regards to all,

I have read in forums that the Uninstall
leaves lots of X10 stuff. That you have to
manually remove from the folders and the
Registry.

"Mission Critical" - LOL - can you say that
without giggling?

Look, I own the corporation, and we are
celebrating our 20th anniversary next
month ... We design, write, and install s/w
in Japan, Australia, Canada, and the US.
We deal on multiple platforms - not just
PCs.  That means handling double-byte
machines and multiple languages.  My staff
know a lot more than just quoting processor
numbers.  I wish I had the time to educate
you ... but I don't ... think what you
want.

X10nets is used by other X10 products, X10
toke the easy way out, instead of checking
if other X10 products requiring the driver
are installed, they just leave it
installed; this would not be so bad but the
driver is left running wasting CPU cycles.

SteveRF

By admitting you have a CPM machine you are
dating yourself, you must be about  30
something.
Is your machine S100 based with 16 address
switches and 8 data switches?

Wait a minute - so you're saying there are
NO plans for a CP/M version of AHP? What are
we to do? What about a version for my old
Apple II+ (originally spelled "Apple ][+")?
