How to achieve Wall Switch Reliability
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:53:14 PM »

I have recently purchased and installed 3
x10 dimmer switches. I can rarely get 2 of
the bedroom ceiling switches to function
either through PLC signals or RF signals.
Both switches are on the "A" house code at
09 and 13 unit selections, however when ever
the light switches are activated, they come
on randomly and there is no log of the
signal being received by either device on
their corresponding device log icon. This
all on an ActiveHome Pro USB system. I have
a phase coupler wired in at the power box.
Are the light switches less sensetive than
the light modules?

Dave: The X10 brand light switches are less
sensitive than the plug-in modules.  This is
because they don't use a neutral wire so the
signal must travel through the load.  Some
third party switches require the use of a
neutral wire and are thus more reliable, but
if you don't have a neutral wire in the
switch box, you can't use them.

If you have a phase coupler, your problem is
probably related to either signal absorption
or powerline noise.  TVs, computers, power
bars, UPSes and CFLs are common problem
devices.  Try unplugging (not just turning
them off) these types of devices until your
switches works reliably, then plug the
problem devices into X10 noise filters.

Dave and Sons; In AHP Tools; Hardware
Configuration; Tranceived House Codes.
Double check that the House Code you are
using for the Socket Rockets is set to be
Tranceived.
