Max distance of cat3 wire
« on: November 13, 2004, 07:44:35 AM »

Can any one help.  I'm trying to set up a
camera that will be 1000' from the vcr/TV.
Will a cat3 signal go that far without
distortion?

I was talking to a tech who has a "Spy
Store". This guy does stuff for law
enforcement and other high profile projects.
He pretty much pooh-poohed X-10's stuff. I
was talking to him about why my reception
was so lousy, and stuff. 'Got aluminum
siding that I think is causing me a
headache. Also, there may be some wire mesh
in these old plaster walls, so I think I'm
living in a Faraday Cage...
He said something to the effect that coax,
(we weren't on the subject of CAT3) would
give you about 400 feet, I think it was. I
don't know if not having any shielding will
erode your signal, it seems like it might,
but they make in-line amps for coax cable
runs. I would think that, if you could put
one of these in-line amps midway between
your run, you might be okay, but I don't
know for sure.

tech support told me they have tested the
wired cams with 1000 ft of cat 3 cable with
no noticable signal loss.

Cool. If that's so, then that's pretty
impressive!

Justin, they do make a cat3 booster that u
can put in line. i run cat5 in pre wireing
houses, for computers we can only run
between 250 and 300 ft!
