net working/show and tell
« on: February 18, 2005, 02:11:02 AM »

How do I get started setting up so everyone
can see our home. Going to be adding on for
the second time only up this time and
thought it might be fun to let others take
a look while I work.
Also thought it would be fun to start a
show The Jerks Cam. we all have one or more
near us.I have one who likes to mow his
lawn throwing stones out all over the house
and at people.

Are you talking Real-Time streaming video,
pre-recorded video or still pics?

Besides a lot of money, I don't know what it
would take to stream live video.  Perhaps X10
has some software and alloted space for us to
use.

Pre-recorded video would probably need to be
in .AVI or.MP3 format and placed on some
reserved disk server on the internet.

I did a test a good while ago with a 30
second pre-recorded AVI file.  I sent it to
the internet on a site I use to maintain to
see if it would work.  It did as long as
I/you have Windows media player.

I also remember going "WOW!" regarding the
space that it took to put it on the net.

At that time I think I only had 300MB of
space and the 30 second clip took nearly all
of it.

As far as the still pic goes of course you
are probably aware that it's just a matter of
sending them out in .JPG.

Have you looked into doing Divx files?  It
seems pinnacle, Roxio/Sonics, have some
great new products to reduce file sizes,
and streaming video.  Let me know what you
find out. I'm interested in investing a few
hundred in that.  If your interested, check
out loveschools.com, and the music video
there.  I could replace that weekly, or
maybe daily, but haven't in over a year.

Good luck, and thanks for the thoughts!!!

Download Windows Media Encoder from
Microsoft.  You can reduce the large AVI
files by about 95% depending on the quality
you choose.  I think Media Encoder also
allows streaming from your server, but never
tried it.  I use Ivista software for the
video ($50) and a KWorld capture card ($40)
to plug my video receiver into.  Ivista
comes with a java applet script to place in
your web page and you direct it to your IP
address.  Also Ivista has a capture function
that will take a picture every few seconds.
At the end of the day you can use Jpeg Video
software to string them all together and
make a time lapse AVI.  It's really kool.

Thanks for the info Tommy.  In the past, I
just plugged a digital camcorder into my
computer and used "Windows Movie Maker" in
XP, and ME, and imported the video I wanted
to put on my website.  It was very easy and
works well.

I guess I could take analog, or X10 video
cameras and plug them into my digicam, and
then import it to Windows Movie Maker, and
paste it on my website.

I'm only paying about $30 a year for a
website that I can paste Windows Media
Player Files on, when every I take the time
to do it.

Anyway, I'm interested in this kind of
thing, but have not spent the time or money
to do much of it yet.

Good Luck!
