DS-10A Sensor - add on a cheap glass break detector!!
« on: March 24, 2005, 08:05:01 PM »

To "foolproof" my windows, I wanted a
sensor that would alert me to any
disturbance.

I installed the DS-10A and soon realized
that would only activate the alarm system
if the window was opened. I wanted
something that would also detect a broken
window (which the DS-10A would not) without
having to replace my existing system.

GOOD NEWS! I purchased several windowbugs
(motion detector) and wired to the DS-10A

Here's how it works:

1. Disconnect one DS-10A wire from the
contact screw and attach to one of the
windowbug leads. Insulate with tape.

2. Attach the remaining windowbug lead to
the now empty contact screw.

3. Mount the DS-10A, contact and windowbug
on the glass pane. This allows the setup to
move with the glass should you need to open
the window. Use alcohol to clean the glass
prior to mounting the DS-10A. Also use
heavy duty double-sided mounting tape.

The windowbug should be mounted according
to instructions provided with the bug.

3. Mount the DS-10A contact magnet on the
window frame adjacent to the contact.

Continuity now flows from the DS-10A, to
the window opening contact, on through the
windowbug and back to the DS-10A.

You now have the best of both a window
glass breakage detector (which doesn't work
if the window is opened) and a contact
switch (which would not detect glass
breakage)!

A cheap and foolproof upgrade for around 8
dollars for the bug!

I've been watching for a responce to this
about what a windowbug is and where it can
be purchased. Does anyone have any ideas?

Has anyone tested the Windowbug with the
X10 door/window sensor by breaking a
window. I understand that it is a very
quick momentary swith that require your
alarm panel or system to be a fast-acting
initiating circuit, with a response time of
20 milliseconds or faster, some systems may
not detect the brief broken loop time and a
pulse stretcher may be required. Pulse
Stretchers require additional wiring and
expense.
