Range for Stick On Switches RSS18
« on: January 15, 2006, 12:23:41 PM »

Just started using some of the Stick On
switches.  The ones I received have a very
short range-  less than 20 feet.  Range
varies from switch to switch.  Are the
batteries bad?  Would replacing them extend
the range considerably, or do these
switches have a short range as a function
of design.

The internal antenna is a little too short
for the operating frequency.  One scheme
which is said to increase the range is to cut
a length of coat hanger wire 18 inches long
and mount it on the wall close to the switch
- either horizontally or vertically.  The
concept is that of a very simplified YAGI
antenna.

Another consideration is the construction of
the wall.  I have one wall which is plaster
over metal lath and the range of an RF switch
on that wall is close to zero.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

I’ve discovered that my physical body as
opposed to the walls will significantly
interfere with the signal if I position
myself between the switch and the
receiver.  It took me a while to figure
this out for my 4’ son was able to get the
switch to work 100% of the time and when I
stood in front of it it failed 100% of the
time.  Once I stepped aside to allow the
signal to see the receiver via a direct
line of sight it works.
