We would love to hear your reactions to unboxing, playing around with it, etc.
Please post your reviews here: http://forums.x10.com/index.php?board=132.0

No anxiously waiting for my confirmation email :-X

I got mine today. 6 business days to Texas. Double-boxed and packed well.
Nice new unit with the peal-off anti-scratch clear plastic on both sides. Also comes with user's manual, charger, USB cable and ear-bud headphones.
Seems to be working fine. Touch screen works good and over-all speed seems fine. We are a Windows shop, and this is my first Android device of any kind. Right now I'm just learning this new OS, config, and installing apps I need.
Along with the usual activities (that I usually use my laptop for), I would like to stream my media from my local Windows server to it and look into some kind of intergration with MediaPortal. Long-range maybe some HA stuff ... this unit would make a great control panel or whole house remote control. I'm looking at HomeSeer and LinuxMCE. For a protocol/controller, maybe Android@Home will come to the rescue since ZigBee didn't show up to play in DIY field (and I've never been too crazy about Z-Wave for some reason).
-
I was notified of shipping on Monday and received the Airpad on Friday...to Hawaii! Good job! I have posted a unboxing video on the review discussion, here is the link;

So that looks like the computer interface. So, are you saying there is a full set of Zigbee devices or ecosystem that will allow a DIY HA user to build a HA system similar to what is available for Z-Wave? They both came on the scene around 2007. The last time I checked, HomeSeer still doesn't support ZigBee. I read somewhere that only the custom (closed) system installers were using it (like maybe Control4 ... or a company similar to that).

I haven't followed HA closely for the past 18 months or so due to health issues so I'm not sure what Zigbee devices are available. Nor do I know enough about their approach to see whether it overcomes the shortcomings of ZWave (with which I am unimpressed). The interface page I linked to says "Note: This device does not ship with a software package and is currently intended for developers that will be creating their own user interface or controller. " They do have documentation for some devices on the download page.

EDIT: A little searching did turn up this...
The UBee dongle looks like it could work with Android tablets. The fact that Centralite has certified devices is especially noteworthy.
The Cisceco link was for a much more ambitious HA initiative. They have a ZigBee like RF device (XRF) with the same footprint as ZigBee radio modules but I'm not at all sure whether there's any real HA hardware or whether it's still pie-in-the-sky. I've exchanged email with the principal behind it but he's somewhat helter-skelter so I'm not clear on where they are. You'll need to look at it yourself.
I was impressed with their Arduino compatible approach and have taken it myself using ZBasic chips (which have built-in low level X-10 functions) and some PICs in a modular design. See...
It will handle almost any existing (or future) protocols (as long as they use serial comms for their interface) as well as IR/RF (and maybe ZigBee or XBee). However, it's still some months away and it remains to be seen whether I will finish it or it will finish me. I had a single board design that did much of this ready to ship 3 years ago when Tibbo withdrew the ethernet-serial module it was designed to use (probably because of patent issues with Lantronix XPort). I had to eat a lot of inventory - I really prefer my fiber another way. This new Arduino-like approach should prevent a repeat of that and gives me the flexibility to react to new developments without a total system redesign.
I'd love to have a tablet to interface with it via WiFi. Hmm, can the AirPad do peer-to-peer WiFi? That's not required but might be handy in some cases.

NO!
I have not received my Airpad.
Ordered on Sept. 2. Was told it shipped on Sept.6th.
Today I was told they think it might ship today but not sure.
So much for the 72 hour promise.
X10 is not off to a good start and I am not a happy customer.
Hopefully the Airpad will be worth it.

Same boat here. I ordered mine on the 2nd and the website clearly said it was going to ship in 72 hours. Even assuming it was 72 business hours and there was a 3-day weekend in there, we're still about a week past the 72-hour mark. B:(
If x10 ran out of stock, as the website would suggest now, a simple apology e-mail would have been nice. One that stated when they were expecting our orders to actually ship and offering a refund if the delay were unacceptable.
Then again, we're buying cheap un-branded Chinese electronics. My customer service expectations were not too high.
-
Well, I never even got a ship notification for my Sept 2 order. Then, when I called customer service to check on it it was after they closed. This was 3 PM pacific time. Was this because I turned down the upsale phone call I got?
This little device had better be good or I'll be seeing exactly how good their return policy is; it won't be hard to wait another month or so for the Kindle tablet to come on the market, and we know they actually ship.
-
Well, I tried to get to customer service again and it still said it was closed. So I went to the normal sales number and asked them why service was closed and they told me customer service had new hours, they shut down at 3 PM Pacific. Noon on the East coast. Really?
So, I asked about my shipment, and sure enough, they haven't shipped it yet. Their shipment was delayed and wouldn't even get to them until next Friday the 16th. That's a bit too much disappointment for me. Here I was believing their advertising and checking the mail hoping it would show up and nothing. The really annoying part is that they didn't send me anything telling me. Oh well.
I cancelled the order.
bye.
-
Their shipment was delayed and wouldn't even get to them until next Friday the 16th.
The website said 72 hours when I ordered it. So instead I have to wait 2 weeks?
Wow. And they haven't made any attempt to tell those of us on backorder when we could expect them.
I didn't expect much from this company, but taking over two weeks to fulfill an order (without stating that clearly up front) is just irresponsible.
I might be canceling my order on principle.
-
I think the noon EST is incorrect.
The web site says Monday-Friday 6AM-3PM (PST) & 9AM-6PM (EST).
-
You're right. I was ticked off at them closing early on the West coast and screwed up. It doesn't change the fact that the message on the phone still says midnight East coast or that they close before people can get off work and call them on the West coast. Not a good thing for customer support, IMHO. Plus, the 72 hours shipment promise that tempted me into ordering one only to wait until after it should have arrived to find out it wasn't going to ship for another week.......maybe.

blacklash, SAME HERE. Ordered on the 3rd of Sept. Was told countless times that it will ship, soon, etc... even "guaranteed" to ship on a certain date.. nothing.
This is really starting to piss me off. $220+ spent, it's now the 13th of Sept... nothing... no tracking, no confirmation of order shipping or soon to be, etc.
Here is the corp phone: 425-203-3900
I will be calling them tomorrow (14th of Sept, 2011) then going to BBB and calling my credit card company to get charges reversed.
X10, what is going on with your customer service? Mind blowing in this day and age, the lack luster you show.
:(
-
I will call them in the morning.
If they cannot give me a firm ship date then I will also cancel my order.
There are to many other tablets available to have to put up with the poor customer service.
-
Please post what you learn here. I don't have a lot of time to waste on the phone. If they don't tell us soon when this will ship, I will try to cancel my order. If I can't get ahold of them then, I will simply contest the credit card transaction they billed me for almost two weeks ago. I'm sure Discover will have my back since I haven't received a product.
-
I would like to know how many have received their AirPad 7's?
If you ordered please state your order date and if you have received an AirPad 7 what date you received it. If you haven't received an AirPad 7 yet please state that you haven't received your AirPad yet.
I ordered my AirPad 7 on 09/02/2011 and I HAVEN'T RECEIVED IT YET!!!
-
Ordered on 9/2/11. Haven't received the unit, haven't received shipping confirmation, haven't received a reply to order status inquiry, and certainly haven't received an apology.
-
Corporate is just as bad, endless recording repeating the same Dial O to reach someone and then silence and the same recording again and again. I see that X-10 is going down the drain as other manufacturers are making similar products.
-
Ordered 9/2/11 - They called about an up-buy. no.. Saw today they charged my CC. But no note of shipment.
-
Long hold time and then I got disconnected.
Called back and about a 10 minute hold I finally got someone.
He said they hope to get another shipment in Friday but no guaranties.
Might ship on Monday or Tuesday next week. Might.
I canceled my order and he said it would take about 10 working days before my credit card is credited.
Didn't take 10 work days to take the money out of my card.
Seems like all the phone numbers ring into the same place and nobody cares about customer service.
The next thing I am going to do is cancel all emails from them.
Won't be buying anything from them again.
And I really wanted a home surveillance system.
-
Ordered mine on 9/11 but nothing - no delivery, no email, no phone call.
But it has been only three days so I am not worried - yet.

Ordered mine 9/2 and received 9/9, working fine so far and posted link to unboxing a few posts earlier, the will post a full review later this week.
-
Ordered very late on 8-29-2011. Received 9-7-2011
There was a 3 day holiday weekend in-between, but I paid a little extra for slightly better shipping, so I think it balanced out.
-
backlash, I agree with you 100%. Their call center is terrible. Even when you call in, they hang up on you, and then dont answer again, because they obviously dont want to deal with an irate customer. But you know, this is how it is when you piss people off who have spent several hundred dollars with you, X10.
Please improve your customer service, call center and more. It's really a major deal killer for us all who have been burned by your current tatics
-
I got my tablet two days before the shipment was scheduled to arrive. The tablet is fine for my needs. I only wish that it could be charged via the USB ports, and not the specialized charging port.
-
Checked again... Ordered on 9/2/11 - Credit charged 9/6/11 - X10 called wanting me to buy another (wish ) app for the tablet on 9/12/11 here it is 9/18/11 and Still have not heard a word... Guess I might have to call CC co and removed X10 charges
And I have been dealing and using X10 for 10+ years now.. Have spent thousands of dollars.. still I can't get help when I need sit.
This WAS going to be a B-day for wife 9/15/11.. Now who is going to pay that bill?
-
Ordered on the 3rd of Sept. It's now 18th, not a word from X10. Credit card billed on the 6th. Is this legal?
-
Howdy,
Ordered AirPan on 8/27/2011, received it on 9/9/2011.
Nice pad so far as I have used it. #:)
-
On another post.. X10 states the shipment is in whs in NJ. :)%
Thats just great!.. Not only was it a B-day gift to wife... but we leave today for a trip to minnesota Would have been nice to have on trip of slience.... because I did not get her what she wanted.. the air-pad.. duh!
Will pass the shipment in the air today I bet.
???
-
Got mine this morning (9/21/2011); unboxed it and it is now charging for4 hours I read.
I ordered it on 9/11. #:) #:)

See that? some people get theirs even when ordering after I did... And I still have nothing from X10 but complants that I post too much...

Complaints didn't come from X10!They came from forum members and not about posting to much But about duplicate posts!
As I stated in my PM to you, I don't work for X10, and this forum is maintained by volunteers!

So if there is more than one area that have post about not getting the shipment.. No one can post more than once.. Sounds like X10 is running this... Piss on customer/user... Its what we say... even when wrong?

Actually, cross-posting the same exact thing is a violation of the rules of the forum. It is also really annoying for the rest of the users here to have to read the same exact complaint from the same user on multiple threads.
Ideally, there should have only been one thread that discussed the delayed shipments, but I guess none of the VOLUNTEER moderators had the time to go through and combine the threads.
And yes, X10 is running this forum. They host it, and their website admin takes care of software upgrades, patches, etc. However, it is the volunteer admins here who handle the day-to-day operation of the site (following usage guidelines established by X10 when they created the forum).
-
Ordered 9/9. Shipped 9/21. Arrived at 9:00 a.m. Notice of shipping arrived same day at noon (email).
-
I've merged the two threads that asked the same questions!
I order Aug 30Th given a tracking number Sept 16Th found out today Sept 27Th it still hasn't left the warehouse.
Volunteering to help with the forum certainly gets you no special treatment! :(
-
Ordered on 8/28 and it arrived on 9/22 or 23. At time of order was told one week but looks like I had to wait for the third shipment to arrive. This is my first droid so still learning but I do have it streaming video from my network hard drive (iomega) along with movies from Netflix.
My biggest disapointment is battery life as two hours is about max. when viewing movies either streamed with WiFi on or direct from a SD card with WiFi off. I have no idea where X-10 came up with thier six hours figure from. Looks like I will have to come up with a small mobile aux. battery / charger if I reall intend to use it as I had planed.
-
Howie270 posted he had found a mobile charger that worked in this thread (http://forums.x10.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=jjrqq29fsj0u9cm8so3nbhq3j2&topic=25121.0)

Thanks but I had seen that post however when I went looking for it they were around $9 plus shipping and I could not find any specs. on it as far as rated output. The OEM charger is 5V at 2000 mA (2A) and most aftermarket chargers are 500 to 700 mA . The 2000 ma output is just barely enough to keep it charged while doing full video streaming.
One alternative would be to use a 50 watt inverter (12V DC to 110 AC) with the OEM charger but that is still not very compact.

Yes, it's lame that item description doesn't even list the DC voltage number, much less the mA max. output level. I guess someone could ask the user to read the label in the other thread.

I asked him to send me photos of the label and the connection. I have not gotten a response yet though. I also had the same reserve about the power output.

OK so I got it today... AFTER the trip. So yes I did pass it at some point. Lets see oedered 9/2/11 - PAID for it 9/6/11 When they charged my CC. I t got here 9/28/11.. Well atleast its here.
And BIG RED LETTERS is yelling...so ya you did..!!

FINALLY SOMETHING...haha... The very day I was going to call and tell them to shove it and give me a refund.
I ordered on September 2, 2011 and four weeks later on September 30, 2011 I got an email saying my AirPad 7 shipped, from New Jersey no less, on September 28, 2011... It is supposed to arrive here on the West Coast at my home on October 4, 2011...
I stopped in a Fred Myers store and was looking at a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and noticed the price $100 off and down to $299. I looked it over and I loved it and so I bought it. What a great tablet with both front and back cameras. I have been loving it and it is a Samsung TOP quality product... I don't know anything it lacks. It is not too much different from my HTC EVO 4G cellphone only just a tad bigger...haha... I ended up selling it to my brother since I am with sprint and Sprint also has the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and ended up buying the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" from Sprint for $199. I can use this unit both on Sprint and WiFi... The best of both worlds...haha...
Well I still intend to have fun with the AirPad 7 too but I should have been on the ball and cancelled when I didn't get it in a couple of weeks and got my money back... Of course I would probably like this AirPad 7 a lot better if it had a back camera...haha...

Ya, I think they are closing those out because the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus were both recently released.
-
Depending if you really want the Airpad after buying the Galaxy, you might consider refusing delivery. The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet for $200 is putting download pricing pressure on the 7" tablet market. Its going to get ugly in the 7" market... good for the consumers bad for the importers/manufacturers.

The Fire is getting good press from the early testers.

Personally, i wouldn't give it the time of day. They don't mention a few key specs, and on top of that, it isn't part of the official android marketplace. they have the amazon market, but lacks the official market.

I'm still holding my breath for a $99 HP Touchpad....however, since the employee sale is over I guess I can exhale.
-
If cost $207 to put together a Kindle Fire and you can buy it for $199. That is certainly a good deal especially with 1 year warranty. It will no doubt draw the interest of hackers especially to port full android (Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Icecream, etc). Just like what they did with the Color Nook. I think Amazon will comply with GPL to release source code (unlike the Chinese manufacturers) making the port easier. Of course this is all speculation.
If the port can't be done, then you still have nice 7" tablet. Either way I think there is now pressure to move closer to $199 price point rather than away for 7" tablet market especially for Christmas and Black Friday selling season

Received my airpad Sept 30Th.
However I wasn't able to get playing with it till today.
This is my first android tablet so it is a whole learning experience.
I'm actually using it now to type this post using the on screen keyboard.
I'll post a short review later this weekend and update it periodically.

First thing I would suggest is opt for a different keyboard. I use Swiftkey, but I hear BigThumb works well also.

Got it! Having purchased an X10 camera and other X10 accessories several years ago, and was very satisfied, I figured this was the real thing. The AirPad tablet has met my expectations. The delivery took a while but I understand supply chain issues and was patient. I've considered getting a couple more but would like better assurance for the delivery timing if these are going to be for Christmas presents.
