PalmPad code changer
« on: June 06, 2007, 04:51:06 PM »

I saw where they have a "doohickey" for changing the house code on a palm pad.
The price was OK. BUT the shipping was $9.95 or $9.99 or something like that.
Made it not worthwhile.
Anyway, I had a broken CD case. So, I used my trusty razor knife to cut off a small piece.
I then removed the cover of the palm pad and gouged out an area at the top with the razor knife. (Not to worry. There is plenty of room.).
After making sure that the piece of CD case would fit in the code wheel slot and turn it easily, I put the cover back on.
I then fitted the piece of CD case into the gouged out area of the palm pad, put pack the code list & cover.
Viola, I now have a built in code wheel key.
The whole thing took only a couple of minutes.
It would be a whole lot neater to use a dremel tool to do this.

Neat idea if you don't need to access it all the time as I do.  I made three from 1/16 inch alluminum and carefully glued them in place with "crazy glue" which works great on composite assemblies like this.  Just be careful the glue only goes where you want it or you'll freeze up the little adjusting wheel.  The permanent installation is practical because the plastic label cover pops off just as easily as it slides off when you need to change the label insert.

That is very true. I also have one with a piece of a paper clip bent & glued in place

When I saw the "dohickey" (forgot what they are called) and the RIDICULOUS shipping charge;
I wanted people to realize that there are simpler, CHEAPER ways to accomplish this.
Tube of Krazy or Super or ? glue about $2.50 + piece of scrap FREE + time about 2 minutes = self satisfaction + BEER money;D ;D ;D
