Title: Retrofit a 3way citcuit with x10 3 way?
Post by: bhatch on May 17, 2011, 08:03:51 PM
Hello,

I am renovating the entire downstairs but this switch on the stop of the stairs is a standard switch, with a standard 14-2 line. I want to convert it to a 3 way Switch but i can not fish a new line to this switch without alto of damage to complex wall; so i wish to avoid this.

Can i run a 14/3 line to the load first then use the x10 timmer as the master and pass a new 14/3 to it. then use the old 14/2 to a slave that i place in the upstairs receptical, essentially using the old line?

Have i got this wrong?
thanks ???

Wow that hurts my head.
If you are asking "can I wire it like the ACT diagram, and get it to work?"
Yes

Are you using X10 Masters and Slaves?

I will use X10 master and salves if it will work if i wire it like the schematic i posted. I have no other X10 equipment in the house

Can i wire it with load in the middle with only using a 14/2 wire to the salve?

also do you know where i can get a modern swtich looking master and slave with a dimmer?

Thanks

You're making my head hurt again.
What do you mean by "in the middle"?

Wire it like the diagram you supplied. The "middle" would be your ceiling fixture box.

Here are some Decora style dimmers, don't know if that is what you are calling "modern".  The XPD3 and XPSS will work fine for you as long as you use only incandescent bulbs. They will not work with CFLs or LED bulbs. X10 does have switches for CFLs but the master needs a neutral line which you don't have with 14-3.

The XPD3 is for regular bulbs. Does X10 have anything for CFL bulbs that is 3 way?
Since US outlawed making any light bulbs greater than 100W, we would like to change out all our regular lamp bulbs to CFLs.

First the 100 watt bulbs have been replaced with a 72 watt halogen that does meet the new energy standards and is has the same Lumen Output. They will work with X10 two wire dimmers.

Yes you can get the WS13A {X10Pro XPS3} switch and the WS14A {X10Pro XPSS} companion. Both are decorator style and can be used with CFLs and most other bulbs. Both need a neutral power feed as the two wire dimmers {not just X10} steal power through the load and CFLs don't like that.
