Title: Problems with a PowerFlash
Post by: djern on January 18, 2007, 10:05:50 PM
I have a Powerflash unit attached to the garage door to indicate whether it is open or closed.  This unit worked good for 5-6 months, but lately it is sporadic.  I have noticed on the activity monitor that it ALWAYS sends an "off"  when the door closes, but sending the "on" when the door opens is the sporadic part.  Has this unit just gone bad?  Or is there something I can do to revive it?

It is set for momentary contact (magnet) and to stay on constant until changed by the magnet.  I was thinking it was a noise problem with the garage door opener, but when I put a plug-in filter on it, the problem was the same.

Any suggestions or should it just RIP.

Check the magnetic switch for proper operation. I have seen magnetic switches get flaky.

I agree with Brian. Based on your description you are using the N.O.contacts of the magnetic switch, so if you have another magnet, open the door and hold the magnet next to the switch for a couple seconds and them move it about a foot away. Repeat this action a couple of times and check your activity monitor for the changes. If the monitor shows the changes your door magnet may be getting weak, or is misaligned. Another way to check is to open the door and jumper across the screws of the Power Flash for a couple of seconds then remove it, repeat this a couple of times. If the activity monitor shows the ON-OFF activity, you probably have a flaky door switch. I have at least four of the Power Flash modules and have had no problems with them.
