I have both jumped into X10 enthusiastically and pulled everything out a couple of times b/c the system is just so damn tempermental. Things seem to work and then not work and to spend as much time as some people seems to be spending to get it to work flawlessly I think is beyond what I have th patience for.
For instance, all of my macros have stopped responding just all of a sudden with no discernable explanation. Some lights have stopped responding as well. One macro which is actually on a different housecode if stimulated long enough will actually trigger a light module on another housecode. All of this is more than I have the time to fiddle with, so what I end up doing is leaving it and hoping it will fix itself, which it sometimes does.
I have another interesting one, some appliances when plugged into an appliance module still appear to be on (on light still illuminated) even when the appliance module is triggered off. This happens temporarily on my coffee pot but continuously on another small appliance. Intuitively I sense this might not be good for the appliance.
Any thoughts on my ramblings.

The indicator lights glowing with the appliance modules off. Is most likely the Local Control Sensing current. It can keep indicators that use little current glowing. Not usually a problem other then the glowing light may annoy some folks.

The problems you are experiencing are typical and relatively easy to resolve. Of course it usually means buying more stuff like filters & a phase coupler. ::)
You definitely have some noise and/or signal degradation issues. Do an Advanced Searches (http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?action=search;advanced) on:

It can be frustrating getting an X10 system to work reliably, but once you understand what can cause problems, it easier to resolve them. All I can suggest is do some reading, try some things and tell us what worked for you and what didn't. We will help you. :)
