Hi
I purchased a ToggleLinc 2-Way Dimmer Switch Model 23980W, because I need a traditional toggle switch in my house. This switch has five wires, which the ToggleLinc instructions suggest wiring in this way:
black - from line into switch
red - from switch to load (light fixture)
white - from load to switch / neutral
yellow - cap; not used
bare copper - ground
I want to replace my current wall switch with this ToggleLinc. Problem is, the existing switch has only three wires:
black
white
ground
How can I wire in the ToggleLinc? Or, have I purchased the wrong switch for my application?
Thanks!

If those are the only wires in the switch box, then you do not have a neutral wire present and therefore cannot connect that switch in that switch box. The white wire present would be for providing line voltage to the light.
You will need to use a switch that does not require a neutral connection.

Thanks very much for the prompt reply. Can you suggest an X10-capable toggle switch that would work in my application?
Thanks

The X10 WS467 (http://www.x10.com/products/x10_ws467.htm) does not require a neutral connection. This switch fits a standard toggle face-plate, but the switch itself is not a toggle, but more of a push on / push off. It is dimmable, but not locally.

Thanks again for the reply. Could I also use the Model: PLW01-W? http://www.activehomepro.com/accessories/pro/plw01_w_wa1_s.html doesn't say that it requires a neutral wire, so I'm assuming that it doesn't. I read the descriptions of both products, but I can't tell the difference between them.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

The PLW01 (http://www.x10pro.com/pro/pdf/plw01.pdf) is the X10 Pro version of the WS467. This switch does not need a neutral wire.
They are identical, except that the Pro versions go through better Quality Testing.
