Title: Wireless Camera Signal Security
Post by: cbargar on July 03, 2008, 01:15:19 AM
Is (or can) the signal from the wireless cameras be intercepted by someone in close proximity?
If not, if I use an X10 wireless camera inside my home, can someone "watch" the activity in the home?

cbargar,

The X10 cameras do not encode the video, so, yes, anyone with a compatible receiver could view your cameras.

................. if I use an X10 wireless camera inside my home, can someone "watch" the activity in the home?

And from what I have read.... there are people that for some reason enjoy "peeking" in on other peoples camera systems. The solution of course... is wired cameras.

Not just X10 wireless cameras. Any brand wireless maybe involved. I have actually seen plans to build antennas to do such things.

I thought so.
Maybe they shouldn't advertize the wireless version as "security" cameras?

Anything that is wireless can be seen by all. Please see this video by Chris Pirillo. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JjU1E3JrWik

Wired or wireless... phones, cell phones, Internet, even trash removal.... security and privacy are more feelings than reality anymore. Technology has made the world a very small place. Whereas we may no longer take the time to get to know our neighbors.... a web search with give us all the info on them we could care to know.

Security Cameras.... actually play on this New Reality. The realization that what you say and what you do will be seen... and even recorded serves as a deterrent to crime. That's why I make my cameras (or at least some of them) visible. I even use my BVC (http://www.davesdomainonline.com/bvc/bvc.htm) setup to announce that cameras are being used. (My setup is posted on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apZF77tsZlI).)
