Title: Does a controlled PR511 expect off command from the PR511 that turned it on?
Post by: x10dude on March 28, 2009, 03:54:43 PM
I have multiple PR511s around the house, but two in particular have had "interesting" behavior (1 above the garage, call it F10, and one at the front door, call it F14.)

The idea is that when F10 detects motion, it would go on and, in turn, turn on F14 to light up the path from the driveway to the front door.

When I first installed them, I used lamp wire, but later discovered that it was against code. At the same time, F10 was burning bulbs every few days, so last week, I replaced the wiring with 14.2 (3-way) wire on both units. So far, F10 hasn't burned any bulbs since.

However, when F10 detects motion and turns on F14, F14 never goes off. I have to manually send it an off command. I had thought that it was the wiring, but with this new grounded wire, shouldn't it work?

I've been wondering whether another lamp on the same run may be causing interference, thus my title question.

* If F14 is waiting for F10 to tell it to go off and it's not receiving the signal for whatever reason, I would focus on looking for the interference

* however, if it's supposed to go off after the predetermined time on its control panel (5 min), then I could have a defective PR511?

Note that I obviously power-cycled the devices when I replaced the wiring, so the recommendation from other threads may not be applicable to this situation.

Thanks in advance!

That is the issue as explained in the manual on page 7! ;)

Thanks for the replies. I had already read the manual, but I still have a doubt.

If I'm understanding this correctly, when a PR511 (F14) is turned on by another PR511 (in this case a controller - F10), it needs to be turned off manually?

Interestingly enough, after shutting down the whole power in my house (as a result of "earth hour" last night), the floodlight is doing what it's supposed to do (from my point of view)- when F10 turns it on, it goes off after 5 minutes (the programmed time). This is the behavior I was expecting. Now, are you saying this is not the way it should work?

Are you sure the F14 Floodlight isn't turning it off? What is its timer set to?
When you turn a PR511 on via a X10 command it waits for the X10 Off command to turn it Off.
When a PR511 sends a x10 ON command, it sends the x10 Off command when it turns itself Off.

If yours is behaving differently and your happy with it then Great!

Thanks tuicemen,

That was the gist of my question. I couldn't figure out whether the PR511 that turned it on was supposed to turn it off too or it simply went off as a result of its timer.

Based on what I know now, it sounds like there was some type of interference (the remote PR511 wasn't getting the off command from the PR511 that turned it on.) Regardless, it now works and if it happens again, I'll know what to look for.
