First of all I am brand new to X10 and what they offer so please excuse me if I am asking something that has already been addressed. My technical know how is 0 on a scale of 1-10.
I have a vacation home and would like to put in a basic security system and was looking at X10 models. Does anyone have any thoughts on how well these system work?
A couple of things I would like to add to my X10 alarm system would be a water detector for the hot water heater and a monitored smoke alarm. I would need both these sensors to activate the x10 console and call me.
Any and all comments/assistance appreciated.

All this can be done! ;)
Search the section on user mods as you'll need to modify sensors for water detection as well as for a smoke detector.
One thing you may wish to think about is how to distinguish what is triggering the phone call.
There are ways to do this also using ActiveHome Pro and all plug-ins.

Thanks for the info. Due to fact that I have 2 left hands do you know of any over the counter ready to go smoke or water detectors that might work with the X10 home alarm system?

Any stand alone or system device that has AUX contacts can be connected to the powerflash device for X10 operation.

True but I don't think a Powerflash will trigger the X10 security console.

Connect the AUX contacts to a DS10A door sensor. All that has is a magnetic reed switch and should work with any device that closes a set of contacts. AND, using a DS10A will trigger the security console.

The DS10A triggers on an open. The contacts of the magnetic switch are closed when the magnet is near it.

Puck posted sometime back... on how to reverse a DS10A (for use with water detection) (http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=11442.msg65292#msg65292). That might help.

If you wanted to get fancy.
A Winland WaterBug water sensing device has both a NO and NC connection. I have a WB-200 that is powered by a wall wort or +12 volts from a security panel.
There is a 9V battery powered WB-350 but it only has a solid state output in the NO condition. Closes on a water detection.

The link looked promising but when I tried it all the pics were not visible.

Yeah... the pictures are there as attachments now (at the bottom). They had been embedded via a geocities (Yahoo) free Web Space. But geocities closed down... in October(?).. I think it was. MANY of us scrambled to get everything preserved. There was a lot of people who linked to images stored on other servers. Looks like I might have left Puck's post less than pretty... I will fix that.
