Title: Can't get ws13 to turn FAN off with remote
Post by: pnsoc513 on August 27, 2010, 10:09:47 AM
I installed WS13 for controlling outside fan. I can turn fan on and off manually at the switch. I can turn fan on remotely using HR 12a remote but if I use remote to turn fan off it cycles off and then back on immediately. I used the neutral bundle in the 4 gang plastic switch box to attach to the ws13 neutral connection. Anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

I had a similar problem with my ceiling fan. I believe the back EMF from the fan motor is turning the switch back on. I solved the problem by putting a 22K ohm 1/2 watt resistor across (in parallel with ) the motor leads as suggested by someone here.

If you used a 22K 1/2 watt. You may want to see if it is getting real hot.
At 120 volts a 22K resistor is dissipating .65 watts.

Good call!

I actually measured the resistance of the 22K ohm coded resistor at 34k ohms...Chinese I guess ;D

After the fan was running for an hour or so I measured the resistor temp with a thermocouple at 84 degrees F.

I tried several values of resistor higher to lower to determine that this one did indeed keep the switch from turning back on.

Well 34K is about .42 watt so it is below the .5 watt rating.
